Alright, so I picked up one of those Nerf golf sets the other day. Wasn’t really planning on it, just saw it tucked away on a shelf while I was out getting some other stuff. Looked simple enough, and honestly, I was looking for something uncomplicated to mess around with. Sometimes you just need a break from screens and complicated projects, you know?
Getting Started
Got it home and opened it up. Typical plastic packaging, took a minute to get everything out. Inside were a couple of plastic clubs – a driver and an iron, I think they called them – a few of those soft Nerf foam balls, and these little flagstick target things. Assembly was basically zero, just had to make sure the club heads were clicked on properly. They felt super light, definitely toys.

Giving it a Whack
Since it was drizzling outside, I decided the living room was the course for the day. Cleared a bit of space between the sofa and the TV stand. Set up one flagstick near the bookshelf as the first “hole”.
Took the driver first. Lined up with the little foam ball. It’s weird trying to hit something so light after years of, well, not playing golf but knowing what a real ball feels like. Gave it a swing. The ball kinda just popped off the club face. Didn’t go far, maybe halfway across the room. It bounced harmlessly off the wall.
Here’s the thing about Nerf balls:
- They are super light.
- They don’t fly straight consistently.
- You can hit them pretty hard indoors without causing damage (mostly).
Switched to the iron for the “approach shot”. Managed to get it closer to the bookshelf flag. Took a few more putts using the side of the iron head – there wasn’t a putter included, which seemed a bit odd, but whatever. Eventually nudged the ball to gently tap the base of the flagstick. Hole one complete! Felt vaguely ridiculous, but kinda fun.
I set up another hole near the doorway. Played a few more “holes” like this. It was more about the novelty than any real skill. Trying to chip the foam ball over a rug or under a chair became the main challenge. My dog watched for a bit, confused, then decided the foam ball looked like a new chew toy and tried to run off with it. Had to rescue the ball a couple of times.
Final Thoughts
So, the Nerf golf set. It’s exactly what you’d expect. It’s a simple, plastic toy for hitting foam balls. The clubs are flimsy, the balls fly unpredictably, and the targets are basic. But for knocking around inside on a boring afternoon, especially if you have kids (or a curious dog), it does the job. It killed about an hour.
It’s not going to teach anyone real golf, not even close. But as a bit of harmless fun, something to get you moving just a little bit without worrying about breaking windows? Yeah, it’s okay. Probably stick it in the closet and pull it out next time I’m really bored or the nephews visit. It served its purpose for a simple distraction, which was all I was really looking for that day.
