Okay, so I decided to hit the range today. Felt like I needed to work some stuff out.
Saw some clips of Austin Perkins golf swing online earlier. Man, that dude hits it pure. Smooth power, looked effortless. Got me thinking, maybe I could try and get some of that feeling, you know? Not expecting miracles, but just wanted to focus on a smoother transition or something.

Hitting the Range
Got to the range, grabbed a large bucket. Started off slow, just hitting wedges. Felt pretty stiff at first, honestly. Lots of thin shots, a few chunks. Not exactly Perkins-level right out of the gate, haha. Just tried to get loose, focus on making contact.
Moved up through the bag. Mid-irons next. This is where I tried to think about that smooth power thing. Focused on tempo, trying not to rush from the top. It’s harder than it looks. My brain knows what it wants to do, but getting my body to cooperate? Whole different story.
- Tried feeling a pause at the top. Didn’t really work, just felt jerky.
- Focused on turning my body through, not just using arms. Better, but inconsistent.
- Hit a few really flush 7-irons. Okay, that felt good. Maybe a glimmer of hope.
Then I pulled out the driver. This is where the wheels usually come off if I try too hard. Thinking about Perkins again, just the way he launches it. I wasn’t trying to swing out of my shoes, just maintain that smooth feeling I sometimes had with the irons. Let’s just say the results were… mixed.
Driver Session Notes:
Some went straight and long (for me, anyway). Felt amazing. Then the next one would be a low hook or a big slice. Super frustrating. It’s like, I know the feeling I’m chasing, that effortless speed, but replicating it consistently? Seems impossible some days.
What I Learned (or Re-Learned)
Main takeaway? Watching guys like Austin Perkins is inspiring, but you can’t just copy-paste a swing. It’s way more about fundamentals. My tempo gets quick, my transition gets rushed, especially when I think about hitting it harder or trying something new I saw.
Spent the last few balls just hitting half-swing wedges again. Trying to find any consistent rhythm. Ended on a decent note, not great, but not terrible either. Felt like I put in the work, even if I didn’t suddenly turn into a tour pro.

Next time? Probably less thinking about specific players and more just basic tempo and contact drills. Gotta walk before you can run, right? Still, it was good to get out there and swing the clubs.
