Okay, so, I got into this whole thing about white defensive backs in the NFL, you know, those guys who play defense but aren’t, well, you know. It started as just me being curious. I mean, you hear about it sometimes, like how it’s not that common, right? So, I started digging around.
First, I just Googled some stuff, like “how many white cornerbacks are in the NFL?” I just wanted to get a general idea. And, man, it’s crazy! It’s not many at all. There was this one article about Riley Moss, a dude playing for the Denver Broncos. Apparently, he was the first white cornerback to get an interception in like, forever. The article said it had been over 20 years since the last white cornerback, some guy named Jason Sehorn, did that.

Then I started looking into why this is a thing. I read that NFL teams and scouts usually think white defensive backs are better for other positions, maybe like safety or something. They think they are not fast enough to play cornerback, which, I guess, makes sense? I don’t know. Cornerbacks need to be super quick.
So, after reading all that, I went down this rabbit hole of looking up individual players. Besides Riley Moss, I found out about a few others, like Cooper DeJean. There was also some dude name Bonner. But seriously, it was mostly just about Moss and Sehorn. I looked up their stats, read some old news articles about them, and watched some highlights on YouTube. It was pretty interesting to see how they play. Moss seems like a really aggressive and athletic player.
- I started with a simple Google search.
- Then I read some articles about the general topic.
- After that, I focused on specific players.
- Finally, I looked up their stats and watched some of their highlights.
My Findings
What I found out is that it’s pretty rare to see white cornerbacks in the NFL. It’s not like it’s forbidden or anything, it’s just not common. And from what I read, it might have something to do with how teams see their skills and what positions they think they’re best suited for. And the NFL is mostly Black players, like 70% or something, so that’s another part of it, I guess.
Anyway, it was a fun little research project. It made me think about how sports and race are kind of intertwined, you know? Like, how people have these ideas about what certain people are good at based on how they look. It’s kind of weird when you think about it. But yeah, that’s my story about white defensive backs in the NFL. It’s not something I normally think about, but it was definitely interesting to learn about.
