Alright, let’s talk about them fellas in the NFL, the ones they call defensive backs, but the white ones, you know? It’s kinda strange, like lookin’ for a hen’s tooth.
You see, most of them boys on the TV, they black fellas, real fast and strong. But where the white boys at? Seems like they mostly playin’ other spots, like them big fellas in the middle, or the ones kickin’ the ball.
- Now, I ain’t sayin’ there ain’t no white defensive backs.
- It’s just… well, it’s like findin’ a needle in a haystack, you hear?
They say only a quarter of the players in the whole darn league are white, but even then, you mostly see ’em in certain places. Like them guard fellas, the ones protectin’ the quarterback? Seems like most of them are white, but them cornerbacks, the ones coverin’ the receivers? Almost all black, every last one of ’em.
I heard some fella on the radio, he was talkin’ about how there ain’t been a white cornerback startin’ in a long, long time. Said somethin’ about all 64 of ’em bein’ black, and their backups too! Can you believe that? 160 black cornerbacks! That’s a whole lotta fellas!
It’s got folks talkin’, sayin’ maybe the white boys just ain’t fast enough, or somethin’. But I don’t buy that. There’s fast white boys everywhere, runnin’ and jumpin’ just like anybody else. Maybe they just ain’t gettin’ the chance, you know?
Seems like they just ain’t lookin’ for white boys to play cornerback. Heard tell they recruitin’ mostly black fellas for that spot. Maybe they think they better at it, I dunno. But it makes you wonder, don’t it?
This fella on the radio, he said somethin’ about white cornerbacks bein’ an “endangered species.” Like them bald eagles, you know? Almost gone. Said there used to be more of ’em, but now… well, they just ain’t many left.
They sayin’ football is changin’, all these fancy plays and passin’ all the time. Maybe that’s why they want them fast black fellas out there. But still, you gotta think there’s some white boys who can do it too. They just need a chance, a fair shake.
I heard tell some folks thinkin’ that it’s a recruitment problem. Maybe them white boys who could be good cornerbacks, they’re playin’ different positions in college, or maybe they ain’t even gettin’ recruited to the big schools. They endin’ up in them smaller colleges, Division II or III they call ‘em. So, the NFL scouts, they ain’t even seein’ ‘em, you know?
And it ain’t just cornerbacks, seems like them running backs, most of them are black too. This report card fella, he said only about 12 percent of running backs are white. But then you look at them kickers and punters, and it’s almost all white fellas! It’s a funny thing, ain’t it? How some positions are mostly one color and some are mostly another.
But things might be changin’, just a little bit. I heard whispers about a few white cornerbacks makin’ it to the NFL lately. They sayin’ there might be three of ‘em startin’ in 2024! Now, that ain’t a whole lot, but it’s somethin’. Maybe it’s a start, maybe we’ll start seein’ more white fellas out there coverin’ them receivers. Who knows?
It’s a big country, this America. Lots of different folks, all colors and kinds. And football, well, it’s supposed to be for everybody, ain’t it? So, it just seems right that we should see all kinds of fellas playin’ every position, no matter what color their skin is. That’s just plain common sense, if you ask me.
So, next time you watchin’ that football game, keep an eye out for them white defensive backs. They’re out there, even if they’re hard to find. And who knows, maybe one day, we’ll see just as many white cornerbacks as black ones. It could happen. Anything’s possible in this crazy world.
