So, I went out today, wanted to really get some reps in using that Ricky Lee football stuff I’ve been thinking about. You know, just trying to sharpen things up a bit.
Got to the field, it was pretty empty which was nice. Just threw my bag down, started stretching out. Felt kinda stiff at first, always takes a minute to get loose. Did some basic jogging, high knees, butt kicks, the usual routine. Gotta get the blood flowing, right?

Getting Started – Footwork Focus
First thing, I wanted to work on footwork. Set up a few cones, just trying to mimic pocket movement. Quick feet, stay light. Man, it felt awkward. I kept tripping over my own feet almost. Felt like I was moving in slow motion compared to how it’s supposed to look. Seriously frustrating. I spent a good 20 minutes just shuffling back and forth, trying to get smoother. Reset the cones like five times ’cause I kept bumping them.
Moving to Throwing
Alright, footwork done, grabbed the ball. Started with short stuff. Just quick throws, trying to hit a spot on the fence I picked out. Warm up the arm easy.
- First few throws felt okay, bit wobbly maybe.
- Then I started trying to put a little more zip on it. Accuracy went out the window. A couple sailed high, one nearly hit a bird I think.
- Tried focusing back on mechanics, step, throw. It got a bit better, but still not consistent. That’s the killer, consistency.
Moved on to some intermediate routes, imagining receivers. Out routes, curls. Tried to lead the imaginary guy. Some felt good, right on the money. Others… not so much. You really feel it when you’re alone, there’s no hiding a bad throw. It just lands somewhere sad and lonely in the grass.
The Deep Ball Experiment
Then I figured, why not? Let’s try some deep balls. This part always feels a bit silly alone. Just launching it downfield to nobody. But hey, gotta practice the motion. Put everything into it, really tried to drive the ball. Some felt powerful coming off the hand. Where they landed? Who knows, probably in another zip code. Accuracy on deep balls needs serious work. Or maybe just someone to actually catch them.
Wrapping It Up
Spent about an hour and a half out there in total. Honestly, felt like I was just going through the motions sometimes with this specific Ricky Lee plan. Some drills felt useful, like the short passing work. Others, like the complex footwork stuff, felt a bit much for where I’m at right now. And throwing deep alone is just… well, it’s throwing deep alone.
Packed up my stuff. Definitely tired. Arm feels it, legs feel it. Did I get dramatically better? Probably not in one session. But I got the work in. Guess that’s the point. Just keep showing up, keep throwing. Maybe mix and match drills next time instead of sticking strictly to one guy’s playbook idea. Find what works for me, you know?
