Alright, alright, let’s talk about this tennis girl, Azarenka, or whatever her name is. I don’t know much about tennis, you know, never really had the time for it, always busy with the farm and the chickens and all. But my grandson, he’s always yapping about her, so I figured, why not, let’s see what the fuss is all about.

Now, they tell me she’s got a kid, a little boy named Leonard. Good for her, I say. Raising a kid is hard work, much harder than hitting a tennis ball, let me tell you. Born in 2016, they say. So, she’s been doing this tennis thing and raising a kid all at the same time. That’s something, I guess.

My grandson, he’s always checking these scores. He gets all worked up if she loses. I tell him, “Boy, it’s just a game! There’s more important things in life, like making sure the cows are milked and the vegetables are watered.” But he don’t listen, kids these days.
They also talk about her “stats” and “tournament results.” Sounds fancy, but it just means how well she’s doing, right? Like, how many times she whacks that ball over the net and the other girl can’t hit it back. Or something like that. I don’t pay much attention to the details, to be honest.
Seems like she plays a lot of matches. Madrid, Rome, Wimbledon… all these fancy places. I ain’t never been to any of them. I’ve been to the county fair a few times, that’s about it. But these tennis folks, they travel all over the world, just to hit a ball. Go figure.
They say you can follow her scores online, on something called “Flashscore” or “ESPN.” I don’t know nothing about that. I got my old radio, that’s enough for me. If I wanna know what’s happening, I just turn it on. But these young folks, they’re always glued to their phones and computers. Times have changed, that’s for sure.
This Azarenka, she’s got a “ranking” too. Means how good she is compared to all the other tennis players. Sometimes she’s up, sometimes she’s down. Life’s like that, ain’t it? One day you’re on top, the next day you’re struggling. Just gotta keep on going, that’s what I always say.
And they even talk about her “h2h statistics,” whatever that means. Head to head, I guess? Like, how many times she’s beaten this player or that player. It’s all a bunch of numbers to me. But I reckon it matters to those tennis folks.
She played some matches recently, they said. Against some other women, Maria, Keys, Sorribes Tormo… I can’t even pronounce half their names. But they’re all out there, hitting that ball and trying to win. It’s a competition, I get it. Just like trying to grow the biggest pumpkins at the county fair, only with more running around.
