Okay, so let’s talk about this golf thing called a “shamble.” I gave it a shot the other day, and it was a pretty good time, even for a hacker like me.
So, the day started like any other weekend golf outing. I got to the course, grabbed my clubs, and met up with my buddies. We were trying something new called a shamble. Basically, it’s a twist on the usual scramble format, which, let me tell you, is a lot more fun than trying to play your own ball the whole time.

We all teed off, which, let’s be honest, is the best part of the game for most of us. You get to wail on the ball and hope for the best. After that, we picked the best drive out of the group. Seemed like I got lucky, and my drive was good, for once. And it happened that we chose my drive as the best shot.
Here’s where the “shamble” part comes in. Instead of everyone hitting from that same spot like in a regular scramble, you play your own ball from where that best drive landed. So, from the second shot onward, it’s like you’re playing regular golf, but you get a huge advantage off the tee.
I went on and played my own ball. I swung my clubs, and the ball flew. I tracked it and found it. I did not make par but got a bogey. This part was more like a normal game of golf, which was a bit of a challenge.
We kept this up for all 18 holes. It was a good mix of teamwork and individual play. You get the fun of a scramble with the tee shots, but you still have to play some real golf after that. Plus, it made me really focus on my long game.
- My short game? Still terrible.
- My putting? Don’t ask.
- But man, I was feeling pretty good about those drives.
We tallied up the scores at the end. Let’s just say I didn’t win, but it wasn’t a total disaster either. It’s a fun format and makes you think a bit more strategically about your team. You don’t necessarily want four long-bombers. It does seem like it’s better to have a mix of skills. Maybe it helps to have one guy who can really smash it off the tee, a couple of guys who are solid with their irons, and then, hopefully, someone who can actually putt.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the shamble was a blast. I’d definitely play it again. I enjoyed the game very much. It’s a great way to change things up and have some fun with your buddies on the course. It is a bit of a challenge, but it is not hard. If you’re looking for something different, I highly recommend you give it a try. And who knows, maybe it will improve your game like it did for me!
