Alright, let’s yak about some basketball fellas, the ones who used to bounce the ball in that big NBA league. Some of ’em, they’re Mormons, you know, like those folks from Utah and places. Heard tell there’s quite a few, so let’s see if we can name a few and what they did with that ball.
First off, there’s this fella, Jimmer Fredette. Now, I ain’t watched him play much myself, but folks say he was a real shooter. Like, he could throw that ball from way out and it’d go swish, right through the net. He played for a bunch of teams, they tell me, didn’t stick around too long in one place though. He played for BYU, that Mormon school, back in the day. Real good shooter, that’s what they say.
Then we got Jabari Parker. Now, he’s a big fella, strong as an ox. He could jump high and dunk that ball hard. Seen him on TV a few times. He was a real talent, but injuries, they say, messed him up. Couldn’t stay healthy, poor fella. Still, he played a good while in the NBA, made a name for himself. He’s one of them Mormon fellas too.
- He played hard, that Jabari.
- Jumped real high, like I said.
- Shame about them injuries, though.
Another one they talk about is Sam Merrill. He played for Utah State, another one of them Utah schools. Folks say he was a good shooter too, like that Jimmer fella. He got drafted, made it to the NBA, but didn’t stick around long neither. Seems like it’s tough to make it in that league, lots of good players, you know. Gotta be real special to last a long time.
There’s this other fella, didn’t play in the NBA much, but he was a big deal at BYU. Name’s… uh… can’t rightly remember. They said he was real good in college, got all sorts of awards. Player of the year, All-American, smart fella too, got them academic awards. But the NBA, well, that’s a different beast, ain’t it? Not everyone makes it big there.

And wouldn’t you know it, there’s even enough Mormon fellas playing to make up whole teams! I heard some folks talking about an “All-Mormon Missionary NBA team.” Can you believe that? They got fellas playing all different positions, point guards, centers, all of it. They even got that Donovan Mitchell fella on there. He’s a good player, that one. Real exciting to watch. Heard he did some missionary work too, good for him.
So, yeah, there’s a bunch of them Mormon fellas playing, or played, in the NBA. Some were stars, some weren’t. But they all made it to the big league, and that’s something to be proud of. It just goes to show you, people from all walks of life, all different beliefs, they can all come together and play some good basketball. It’s a good thing, I reckon. Brings people together, you know?
Now, I ain’t no expert on basketball, but I know what I see. And I see some good, hard-working fellas, who happen to be Mormon, playing a game they love. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
It’s kinda interestin’ how many of these fellas came from them Utah schools. Guess they got some good basketball programs over there. And it ain’t just about basketball neither. These fellas, they got their faith, they got their families. They’re good people, from what I hear. And that’s more important than any basketball game, if you ask me.
So next time you’re watchin’ a game, and you see one of them fellas playin’, remember they might be a Mormon. And remember, they worked hard to get where they are. Just like anyone else, they got dreams and goals. And they’re out there, chasin’ ’em, one basket at a time.

And that’s about all I know about them Mormon fellas playin’ basketball. Hope I made some sense. It ain’t always easy keepin’ up with all them young fellas and their fancy moves.
