So you guys wanna know how those Swedish tennis dudes train? Like seriously – why are they always so damn consistent? I was curious too, so I flew to Stockholm last month to stalk… I mean, study their methods. Got an old college buddy coaching juniors there who hooked me up.
First thing Monday morning I dragged my jet-lagged ass to their training complex. Thought I’d see some flashy high-tech stuff right? Nah. Coach Anders made me sit on a freezing metal bench for 90 minutes just watching them jump rope. Seriously. Rope. Jumping.

The warm-up from hell:
- 10 minutes basic jumps – normal
- 10 minutes one-foot hops – calf killer
- 15 minutes double-unders – failed attempts hilarious
When they finally picked up rackets, instead of smashing serves like I expected, they spent 45 minutes just bouncing balls on their strings. Not even over the net! Just… bouncing. Up down up down. Looking bored as hell.
The “secret session” that broke me
Tuesday they let me participate. Worst decision ever. Coach made us play “ghost doubles” – pretending there’s partners that aren’t there. Full sprint between imaginary players while actually playing singles. After 20 minutes I was seeing actual ghosts.
Afternoon session? Footwork drills in wet sand by the harbor. Turns out they do this even in January when it’s -5°C. Why? Coach shrugged: “If you can move here, hard court feels like butter.” My frozen toes still haven’t forgiven me.
The scary consistent routines:
- Same breakfast daily – oatmeal with weird Nordic berries
- Match analysis every night for exactly 1 hour – timer beeps they stop
- Cold showers after practice even with sauna available – madness
Thursday I cracked and asked Elias why they don’t do more fancy drills. He laughed: “My grandma could beat people who only train pretty. Ugly practice wins matches.” Then he proceeded to hit serves til his shoulder was red. Not 100. Not 200. Dude counted exactly 137 every session.
Honestly? The secret is there’s no secret. It’s doing boring shit perfectly until your eyes bleed. Came back home and tried their program for 3 weeks – almost quit tennis altogether. Respect those Nordic machines now.
