Alright folks, so today I’m tackling that annoying golf chess set clutter. You know the struggle – pieces rolling everywhere, tangled clubs knocking against fragile pieces. Absolute chaos in my game room.
The “Oh Crap” Moment
Opened my storage closet last Tuesday and boom! Chess board slid off the top shelf, pieces went flying like shrapnel. Spent 20 minutes crawling around hunting for pawns under furniture. That’s when I snapped – needed organization NOW.

Trash Bag Treasure Hunt
Dug through my garage junk like a raccoon. Found stuff for zero bucks:
- Empty plastic toolbox with removable dividers (remember that 5-year-old fishing tackle box?)
- Cardboard wine bottle dividers (from holiday gifts)
- Old microfiber towels
- Stretchy hair ties from my daughter’s bathroom
Making the Frankenstein Organizer
Slapped the wine dividers inside the toolbox – perfect squares for chess pieces! Wrapped kings and queens in microfiber before dropping them in. Boom, no more clanking.
For the golf clubs? That was slick – bundled putters together with hair ties like bouquet stems. Wedges stuck upside down in the toolbox handle holes. Used leftover towel scraps to stuff between club heads so they quit banging like windchimes.
Storing the Beast
Got ruthless. Ditched the original box – took up half a shelf! Stacked the compacted toolbox vertically between board games. Chess board slides flat behind my bookshelf now. Whole setup takes less space than two shoeboxes.
Why This Actually Works
Tested it hard last weekend – grabbed just irons for practice without dumping every club on the floor. Friends came over Sunday; pulled out ONLY chess pieces in 10 seconds flat. No more “where’s the black knight?” scavenger hunts. Feels like adulting finally caught up with my hobbies.
