So, I had this whole thing planned out to get better at golf, right? I’ve been hitting the range, practicing my swing, the whole nine yards. But, man, it’s tough to see real progress when you’re just whacking balls into the distance. That’s when my buddy told me about this “shamble” thing in golf. Sounds kinda funny, but it seemed like a good way to actually play and see how I stack up.
Basically, we formed into teams. I teamed up with a couple of friends who are, shall we say, not exactly pros. We started by all hitting our drives, just like a normal game. But here’s the kicker – we picked the best drive out of the bunch. It felt good to see one of my drives actually go straight for once, and we ended up using it. Teamwork makes the dream work, you know?

After that, things got real. From where that best drive landed, we each played our own ball. No more picking the best shot, just straight-up golf. Let me tell you, it’s a whole different ball game when you’re not just blasting away at the range. You gotta think about each shot, where you want the ball to go, and how the wind’s gonna mess with you.
We went through the whole course like this. Hitting our own balls after the tee-off, keeping our own scores. I won’t lie, there were some rough patches. I shanked a few, ended up in the sand more times than I’d like to admit, and even managed to lose a ball in the water. Classic me.
But here’s the thing – even though I messed up a bunch, it was actually super helpful. I could see exactly where I was going wrong. My short game needs work, big time. And those darn bunkers? Don’t even get me started. This shamble thing really showed me what I need to focus on.
At the end of the day, my score wasn’t going to win any awards. But, I learned a ton. Plus, it was way more fun than just practicing alone. We were laughing, giving each other a hard time, and just enjoying the game. That’s what it’s all about, right?
I’m definitely going to do this shamble thing again. Maybe with some different people, maybe at a different course. But one thing’s for sure – it’s a great way to actually play the game, see your weaknesses, and have a good time doing it. If you’re looking for a way to spice up your golf game and get some real practice in, give it a shot. You might be surprised at how much you learn, and how much fun you have along the way.
- Tee Off Together: Everyone hits their drive.
- Pick the Best: Decide which drive is the best.
- Play Your Own Ball: From that spot, play your own ball for the rest of the hole.
- Keep Score: Count your own strokes.
- Have Fun: It’s all about enjoying the game!
Keep in Mind
This is just how I did it, and it worked for me. You can always tweak things to fit your group and what you want to get out of it. The important thing is to get out there, swing the clubs, and have a good time. After all, isn’t that what golf is really all about? (Well, that and maybe sinking a few putts.)
