Alright, let’s talk about this “shamble” thing in golf. I ain’t no fancy golfer, mind you, but I’ve seen my share of folks hittin’ balls ’round the green. This shamble, it’s kinda like a mix-up, you know? Not quite a scramble, not quite playin’ your own ball all the time.
So, first off, everybody tees off. You know, whack that ball off the little tee thingy. Then, the team, they get together and decide whose ball went the furthest, or maybe the straightest, you know, the best one. That’s the one they gonna use. It’s like pickin’ the best apple from a bunch, you see? You ain’t gonna pick the rotten one, are ya?

Now, here’s where it gets a little different. Once you picked that best ball, everybody gets to move their ball to that spot. But not exactly, ya hear? Most times, they let you move it within a club length, so you ain’t cheatin’, just gettin’ a better shot. And they say you can’t change the lie of the ball, meaning you can’t move it from the tall grass to the short grass just ’cause you want to. That ain’t fair, is it?
- So, everyone hits from the same good spot, makes it a bit easier, I reckon.
- But then, after that, you play your own ball. That’s the part that’s different from a scramble. In a scramble, you keep pickin’ the best shot all the way to the hole. Shamble ain’t like that.
- You’re on your own, gotta get that ball in the hole yourself. No more helpin’ each other out, unless you’re givin’ advice, you know, “aim left” or “hit it harder” and that kind of stuff.
Now, how you score in this shamble thing? Well, it depends. Sometimes they count the best ball of the team, sometimes they count two balls, sometimes everybody’s score matters. It all depends on what them tournament folks decide, I guess. They like makin’ things complicated, don’t they?
Why do people play this way? Well, I reckon it’s ’cause it’s fun. It ain’t as serious as regular golf, you know, where everybody’s all stressed out about their score. Shamble’s more relaxed, more about havin’ a good time with your buddies. And it’s good for charity tournaments too. Folks like to play when they know they’re helpin’ somebody out, even if they ain’t no good at golf.
You wanna be good at shamble? Well, first off, you gotta have somebody on your team who can hit that tee shot far and straight. That’s the most important thing. If nobody can hit a good drive, you’re in trouble right from the start. It’s like havin’ a car with no engine, ain’t gonna go anywhere, right? Then, everybody gotta be decent at hittin’ their own ball. You can’t rely on your teammates all the time, you gotta do your part too.
There are different ways to play shamble, too. Sometimes they let you place the ball, sometimes you gotta drop it. Sometimes they let you move it more than a club length, sometimes less. It all depends on the rules of the day, I suppose. You just gotta listen to what they tell ya and try to follow along. It ain’t rocket science, even an old lady like me can understand it.
Shamble, it’s a good way to get folks together, have some laughs, and maybe hit a few good shots. It ain’t always about winnin’, you know. Sometimes it’s just about enjoyin’ the sunshine and the company. And maybe havin’ a hot dog and a beer after the game. That’s what I call a good day of golfin’, shamble or no shamble.
So next time you hear about a shamble golf tournament, don’t be afraid to give it a try. It’s a fun way to play, even if you’re not the best golfer in the world. Just remember to hit that tee shot straight, pick the best one, and then do your best to get your own ball in the hole. And most importantly, have fun!
