Alright, let’s talk about this tennis racket thing, the one that fella Nick… Nick… what’s his name? Oh yeah, Kyrgios uses. You know, that loud young man, always yelling on the court. My grandson, he likes him, says he’s got “fire.” I don’t know about fire, seems more like a firecracker to me, always popping off!
So, this racket, it’s a Yonex something or other. Sounds fancy, like something you’d find in a city store, not in my old shed. They call it the Ezone, E-zone… like a danger zone? Maybe that’s why that boy hits the ball so hard! My grandson tells me it’s a Yonex Ezone DR 98, but then he says the boy actually plays with somethin’ called a Yonex Ezone Xi 98. Kids these days, always confusing an old woman.

Now, what does all that mumbo jumbo mean? Honestly, I ain’t got a clue. But I reckon it’s gotta be somethin’ special if a professional like that uses it. He hits that ball hard, real hard, makes a sound like thunder. This racket, it must be strong, real strong, like my old cast iron pan. You could probably beat a rug with it, or maybe even chase a chicken or two! Don’t tell my grandson I said that, he’d have a fit.
- Power: I guess this racket helps him hit the ball far. Farther than I can throw a rock at a pesky squirrel, that’s for sure.
- Finesse: That means fancy, right? Like those city folks and their fancy coffees. So, the racket helps him do trick shots, I suppose. Not like my trick shots, which mostly involve not spilling my tea.
My grandson, he’s always wanting the newest this and the newest that. New shoes, new video games, always something. He says you gotta have the best to play the best. But I tell him, “Boy, it ain’t the arrow, it’s the Indian!” You could give me that fancy racket, and I still wouldn’t be able to hit a ball over the net. I’d probably hit myself in the foot!
But you know, if you’re a young fella, or a young gal, and you’re serious about this tennis thing, maybe you do need a good racket. And maybe this Yonex thingy is the one for you. But don’t go breakin’ the bank for it. If your old racket still works, then keep usin’ it! Like my old hoe, it’s got a few dents, but it still gets the job done. That’s what my old man used to say anyway: “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
My grandson, he keeps talkin’ about the “sweet spot” on the racket. Said this Yonex has a big one. I told him my cast iron pan has a sweet spot too, right in the middle, perfect for frying an egg. He just rolled his eyes. Kids these days, no respect for the old ways.
Anyways, from what I gather, this Nick Kyrgios tennis racket, whether it’s the DR 98 or the Xi 98, it’s supposed to be a good one. It’s for hitting the ball hard, making it go fast, and maybe doin’ some fancy stuff too. But remember, it ain’t the racket that makes the player. It’s the practice, the sweat, the determination. And maybe a little bit of that “fire” my grandson talks about. Just don’t go yelling on the court like that Nick fella, it ain’t polite.
So, there you have it. My two cents on this whole racket business. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make sure those chickens ain’t gettin’ into my garden again.
