Okay, so, I’ve been working on this little project where I need to sort out all the Major League Baseball teams, you know, MLB? It’s that big baseball league with like 30 teams all over the US and even Canada. I needed a quick way to refer to these teams, just like a short form, using three letters or less. Like when you’re making notes or something, and you don’t want to write the whole team name every time.
I started digging around, you know, just Googling stuff. I found a bunch of pages that kinda talked about this, but nothing super clear. It wasn’t easy to get all this stuff in one place. It took me some time, but I started putting together this list.

I used a simple text editor to jot down these abbreviations as I found them. I decided that I need a list to keep all this clear. So, I made a list of the team’s full name and their abbreviation. It looked something like this:
- Arizona Diamondbacks – ARI
- Atlanta Braves – ATL
- Baltimore Orioles – BAL
- Boston Red Sox – BOS
- Chicago Cubs – CHC
- …and so on, but you can get the idea.
I kept adding to this list every time I found a new abbreviation. It was pretty manual, you know, going through different websites, making sure I got it right. I also noticed some teams had changed names or moved cities before, so I made a note of their previous abbreviations too. I wrote some codes like “ANA” for the Anaheim Angels.
After a while, I had this neat little document with all 30 MLB teams and their abbreviations. I even found out that sometimes a player might play for more than two teams in one season, and folks use “TOT” for that, which stands for “Two Other Teams”. Who knew?
Finally It Works
In the end, I got what I needed. Now, whenever I’m working on my baseball project, I can just quickly look up the team abbreviation. It’s super handy. I thought I’d share this here because, why not? Maybe someone else will find it useful. It’s not every day you need MLB team abbreviations, but when you do, it’s nice to have them all in one place.
And that’s the story of how I ended up making my own MLB team abbreviation list. It’s not rocket science, but it’s one of those small things that makes life a bit easier when you’re messing around with data and stuff. If you’re doing anything with MLB, hopefully, this will save you some time. Just a heads-up, I did this on Wednesday, December 11th, if that matters.
