So, the other day I was bored out of my mind and stumbled upon this “Lone Ranger” golf game idea. I’d never heard of it, but it sounded like a fun way to spice up a regular round. Basically, you rotate who the “Lone Ranger” is on each hole, and that person has to try and beat the combined score of the other players. Sounded simple enough, so I grabbed my clubs and headed to the course.
Getting Started
First thing I did was convince my usual golf buddies to give it a shot. They were a little hesitant at first. I explained the rules again, maybe a little slower this time, and they finally got on board.

We decided to play it with three players. I figured it to be a good start. It’s me and my two best friends.
The Actual Game
- First Hole: I was the Lone Ranger first. I got lucky because my drive was good and my approach short was on point. Ended up with a par. My buddies, playing as a team, they messed up a bit, and one of them ended up in the bunker. They scored a bogey. Point for me!
- Second Hole: My buddy, Mark, was up. He’s usually pretty steady, but the pressure got to him. He sliced his tee shot into the trees, and it took him a couple of extra strokes to get back on track. I and Jim scrambled a decent score, so we beat him.
- Third Hole:Jim, who is often unpredicatble had his time. He started off shaky, duffing his tee shot. But then, he somehow pulled off an amazing recovery shot from the rough, landing it right on the green. I and Mark had a so-so hole, nothing special. He won.
We kept rotating like that for the rest of the round. Some holes were hilarious, with guys getting super competitive and trying crazy shots. Other holes were a bit of a grind, especially when the Lone Ranger had a bad lie or ended up in a hazard.
Keeping the Score
We used a regular scorecard, but just added a little “LR” column to keep track of who the Lone Ranger was on each hole. Then, it was simple to see who won each hole – the Lone Ranger or the “team”.
The Result
I did not keep the score, but I think I won two, Mark won another two, and Jim only won one.
Honestly, it was way more fun than I expected! It added a whole new layer of strategy and trash-talking to the game. Definitely going to try this again, maybe with a few more people next time. It added a whole new twist.
