Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this kickboxing thing lately, and I gotta say, setting up a ring is way more involved than I thought it would be. I mean, I knew it wasn’t just throwing down some mats and calling it a day, but damn.
First off, I figured I needed a legit ring, not just some taped-off area in my garage. So, I started looking into it, and apparently, competition rings have to have four ropes. Who knew? I sure didn’t. I just thought it was a cage, that kind of thing. I started drawing down the blueprint on a piece of paper.

Then there’s all this stuff about the ring’s components. It’s not just the ropes and the floor, but there are all these side protections, corner pads, and specific ways the ropes have to be set up. I mean, you can’t just string up some clothesline and call it good. I spent a whole afternoon just measuring out the space and trying to figure out how to secure the posts, and it was a headache. My wife thought I was crazy, ha.
Safety First, Right?
- Warm-up: I tried to do some warm-up before heavy training, just like those guys online, and I didn’t pull anything. But I always forgot this when I was in a rush.
- Gear Up: I did buy some basic protective gear – gloves, hand wraps, the whole nine yards. I felt like a real fighter. But those gloves are stinky after a while.
- Find a Coach?: Then I thought maybe I should find someone who knows what they’re doing, some kind of coach. But honestly, I just ended up watching more videos online. Maybe I should have thought twice about it.
Then, trying to practice in the thing? That’s a whole other story. I thought I was in decent shape, but after a few rounds of hitting the bag and trying to move around like those pros, I was gassed. And let me tell you, those ropes are harder than they look. I bounced off them a few times harder than I expected. I had to stop because I started feeling some real pain in my lower back. Maybe I overdid it.
So yeah, setting up a kickboxing ring and actually using it? It’s a learning curve, to say the least. But hey, I’m getting there. Slowly but surely. It’s definitely a lot harder than I thought it would be, but I’m still figuring it out. My wife is asking me if I need that much space to just work out. I told her “leave me alone.” I am still working on it.
