So, I started thinking about the 2025 NFL draft the other day, just kicking around some names in my head. Donovan Edwards, the running back from Michigan, popped up. I remember watching him quite a bit, especially with Blake Corum getting so much attention.
First Pass – Remembering the Big Plays
My first step was just recalling what I already knew. Big moments, right? That national championship game, he really showed up. Had those long touchdown runs. You see flashes like that, and you think, yeah, this guy’s got NFL potential written all over him. He’s got that burst, clearly. I also remembered him being used quite a bit as a receiver out of the backfield in the past. Versatility is always a plus, teams love that stuff.

Digging into Last Season’s Feel
Then I decided to pull up some more specific stuff from last season, not just the highlight reels. Watched some regular game cut-ups. Honestly, it felt a bit uneven sometimes. Maybe it was playing alongside Corum, maybe defenses keyed on him differently when Corum was out or when he was the main focus. He didn’t always hit the hole with the same decisiveness, felt like sometimes he was looking for the big play instead of just taking the yards that were there. But then, boom, he’d rip off a 20-yarder or make a great catch.
I jotted down a few things:
- Explosiveness: It’s definitely there. When he finds a crease, he can go.
- Receiving Skills: Looks natural catching the ball, could be a real weapon in the passing game.
- Consistency: This was the question mark I kept coming back to based on just watching. Sometimes looked hesitant.
- Vision: Seemed okay, but maybe not elite? Hard to tell without knowing the blocking assignments on every play, obviously.
Checking the Early Buzz
After watching for a bit, I scrolled through some forums and checked out what the early draft folks were saying. Not looking for deep analysis yet, just the general temperature. It seemed pretty mixed, which kind of matched what I was feeling. Lots of people pointing to the big-play ability and the receiving upside. But also, folks questioning if he can be a true every-down back, handle the load between the tackles consistently. The comparison to his own previous seasons often came up, where maybe he looked a bit more dynamic before last year.
Putting it Together (For Now)
So, where did I land after this initial look? Edwards is definitely an interesting prospect for 2025. You can’t teach that speed and receiving ability. But NFL teams are gonna look hard at that consistency stuff. Can he be the guy, or is he more of a change-of-pace, third-down weapon? A lot probably depends on how he looks this upcoming season, now that he’s the clear lead back at Michigan. He’s got the chance to answer those questions. For now, I’ve got him marked down as a guy to watch closely. Definitely has the tools, just needs to put it all together week in, week out.
