Okay, so here’s the deal. I messed around with my golf grip today, and I figured I’d share how it went down. It was a whole process, not gonna lie.
First off, I noticed my shots were all over the place. Like, seriously inconsistent. Some days I’d slice like crazy, other days I’d hook it into the woods. I knew something was up, and I had a feeling it was my grip. I’ve been using the same grip forever and never really thought about changing. But a buddy of mine who’s way better than me suggested I take a look at it.

So, I started watching a bunch of videos on YouTube. Hours and hours of golf grip tutorials. Overlapping grip, interlocking grip, ten-finger grip… my head was spinning! I finally decided to try out the interlocking grip. I have small hands, and it seemed like it might give me a little more control.
I went to the driving range with a bucket of balls and just started experimenting. Man, it felt WEIRD at first. Like I was holding the club completely wrong. My first few shots were awful. Seriously, shanks, tops, the whole shebang. I almost gave up right then and there.
But I stuck with it. I focused on feeling the club in my hands, making sure my grip wasn’t too tight. I tried to relax my shoulders and just let the club do the work. Slowly but surely, things started to improve.
I realized that the interlocking grip helped me keep my wrists from getting too active during the swing. I tend to get a little wristy, which leads to inconsistent contact. With the new grip, I felt like I had more control over the clubface.
After a couple of hours, I was actually hitting some pretty decent shots. Not perfect, mind you, but definitely better than before. I was hitting the ball straighter and with more consistency. I even managed to draw the ball a few times, which I almost never do.
Then I decided to take it to the course. Big mistake? Maybe. But I wanted to see how the new grip would hold up under pressure. The first few holes were rough. I was thinking too much about my grip and not enough about my swing. I chunked a few shots and missed a couple of easy putts.
But I told myself to relax and just play golf. Forget about the grip for a while and just focus on making good swings. And you know what? It worked! I started hitting the ball better, and my scores started to improve. I didn’t play my best round ever, but I definitely played better than I expected, considering I was using a brand new grip.

So, all in all, I’d say the grip change was a success. It’s still a work in progress, and I’m sure I’ll have some bad days along the way. But I feel like I’m on the right track. The interlocking grip seems to give me more control and consistency, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.
- I watched a ton of YouTube videos.
- I tried the interlocking grip.
- I practiced at the driving range.
- I played a round of golf.
My final thought is don’t be afraid to experiment with your grip. It might feel weird at first, but it could be the key to unlocking your potential. Just be patient, stick with it, and don’t get discouraged if you have a few bad shots. It’s all part of the process.
