So, the other day, I was watching an NBA game with my buddy, and he’s kinda new to basketball. He keeps asking, “how long is a nba quarter?” I told him, but then I realized, maybe I should actually time it myself, just to be super sure, you know?
My Little Experiment
So, I grabbed my phone, got the stopwatch ready, and settled in to watch the game. I was all set to start timing the moment the ball was in play.

- First Quarter: I hit start right as the ref tossed the ball up. There were a couple of fouls, a timeout, and the usual back-and-forth. When the buzzer sounded, I stopped the timer. Guess what? It wasn’t exactly 12 minutes, more like 18 with all that extra time!
I did this for each quarter, carefully, pressing start and stop. Every time, it’s longer than 12, the add times is not stable.
Then, halftime came. I know it is take 15-minutes break, but I want to get the exact time so I time it too. you know what? It is really close to 15 minutes.
It’s kinda funny, though, because even though the official game time is 12 minutes per quarter, it feels way longer when you’re actually watching, especially if it’s a close game! All those little breaks really add up.
The offical say it takes 12 minutes, I get that, but My experiment show it really take longer than that!
