Okay, so, a bunch of us decided to try out this “shamble” thing in golf the other day. Never done it before, always up for something new on the course, you know?
We got started early, sun just coming up, perfect weather. There were four of us, all pretty decent players, handicaps ranging from like, 10 to 18, nothing crazy. We all teed off on the first hole, like usual. Now, this is where it gets different. We looked at all our drives – some were pretty, some not so much – and we picked the best one.

- After we chose the best drive, we all moved our balls to that spot. Well, not exactly on it, had to be within a club length, and not closer to the hole, obviously.
- Then, it was every man for himself. We each played our own ball from there, kept our own scores, the whole deal.
- I tried to calculate my handicap using their way. I multiplied my handicap by 0.8 and got a weird number, but I just rounded it up.
How we kept things straight:
It was actually pretty fun. You get that little bit of teamwork at the start, but then you still have to play your own game. It felt a little weird at first, dropping my ball near someone else’s drive, but you get used to it. I even managed to use the good tee shot to make par a couple of times, which felt amazing! And because we are good friends, we helped each other to find balls in the rough and gave some encouragement.
At the end of the day, we added up the two best scores on each hole for our team score. We didn’t win any imaginary tournament or anything, but it was a blast. Definitely going to try the shamble format again sometime. It’s a good way to mix things up, especially if you usually just play regular stroke play.
Oh, and we celebrated after with some cold ones at the clubhouse. Good times, good golf, good format. If you are into golf and you are seeking some interesting golf format, you should definitely try this shamble out.
