Alright, let’s talk about grabbing a defense for fantasy football. Man, I used to spend way too much time stressing over this. I’d draft one kinda high, thinking, “Yeah, this is the one!” Then they’d stink it up, or get injured, or just face a brutal schedule.
It felt like I was always guessing wrong. Chasing last week’s points, you know? If a defense put up 20 points, I’d scramble to get them, only for them to score like, two points the next week against a team I thought was terrible. Drove me absolutely crazy for a few seasons.

What Changed for Me
Then I just kinda stopped caring so much about finding the defense. Sounds weird, right? But I realized it’s mostly about the weekly matchup. Like, seriously, who are they playing this week? That became my main thing.
So, here’s my routine now, usually starting on Tuesday or Wednesday morning after waivers clear:
- I first check who my current defense is playing. If it’s a tough matchup, like against the Chiefs or Bills, I’m probably dropping them. No hard feelings.
- Then I hit the waiver wire. I scroll through the available defenses. I’m not looking for big names.
- I look purely at the matchups for the upcoming week. Who’s playing the worst offenses? Like, really bad ones. Teams that turn the ball over a lot, give up sacks, or just can’t score.
- I check if the defense I’m eyeing is playing at home. Not a dealbreaker, but it’s a nice little bonus sometimes.
- I glance at whether the defense actually forces turnovers or gets sacks. I care less about how many yards they give up and more about those big-play points fantasy defenses get.
Honestly, that’s pretty much it. I find a defense, usually a pretty unloved one, that just has a juicy matchup. Maybe they’re playing a rookie quarterback making his first start, or a team with a banged-up offensive line. Perfect.
I pick them up. I play them. I don’t expect 20 points. If I get 7-10 points from my defense, I’m happy. That’s solid. Then, next week, I usually drop them and do the whole thing over again. It’s called streaming, I guess, but really it’s just me being lazy and practical.
It saves me the headache of trying to predict season-long performance. I stopped trying to find a set-and-forget defense because, for me at least, they barely exist. Just play the matchups week by week. It’s made managing my fantasy teams way less stressful. Took me a few years of screwing it up to land on this, but hey, better late than never.
