Okay, so I decided to really get into this whole golf swing versus baseball swing thing myself. Heard a lot of talk, folks saying they’re basically the same, others saying nah, totally different beasts. I figured the only way to know for sure was to actually get out there and swing some things.
First stop was the driving range. Got myself a bucket of balls and my trusty 7-iron. I really focused on what the golf pros talk about – keeping that head still, the smooth takeaway, shifting the weight, and hitting down on the ball. It felt… controlled? Yeah, controlled is the word. Like I was trying to guide the club precisely to the ball.

- Tried to keep my arms connected to my body rotation.
- Focused on that downward strike to compress the ball.
- Weight shift felt like coiling and uncoiling, more rotational.
- The swing plane felt much more upright, or tilted, aiming down at the ground where the ball sat.
Then, a couple of days later, I headed over to the batting cages. Different vibe altogether. Grabbed a bat, felt heavier, different balance. The machine started pitching, and instinct just took over differently. It wasn’t about precision hitting down; it was about meeting the ball out front, level, and driving it hard.
- Stance felt more athletic, ready to react.
- Weight shift felt more aggressive, driving forward through the ball.
- The swing plane was definitely more level, even slightly uppercutting depending on the pitch.
- Felt like I was using my whole body in a more explosive, less controlled way.
What I Really Noticed
Man, trying them back-to-back really highlighted the differences. It wasn’t subtle.
The swing plane is the big one. Golf is fundamentally hitting down on a stationary object on the ground. You need that angle. Baseball is hitting a moving object, usually around waist height, so the swing path is naturally flatter, more level or slightly up.
The lower body and weight shift also felt distinct. Golf felt like rotating around a stable base, a controlled coil and uncoil. Baseball involved a more dynamic forward drive, really stepping into the pitch sometimes, generating power to hit distance.
Intent is different too. Golf feels like trying to achieve consistent precision. Baseball feels more like reactive power generation. It’s just a different mindset when you step up to the tee versus the plate.
I remember this one time, soon after I started this little experiment, I was playing a round of golf with my buddies. Had a terrible slice going all day. Out of frustration, on one tee, I just thought, “Screw it, baseball swing!” Big mistake. Took a massive hack, almost came out of my shoes. The ball? It sort of dribbled weakly off to the right, maybe went 50 yards. Looked like a complete idiot. My friends still bring it up. It really hammered home how you can’t just swap the mechanics; the whole approach is different.
So yeah, I went out and did it. Tried both swings, paid attention to how they felt. They both use rotation and power, sure, but the setup, the plane, the weight shift, the goal… it’s all pretty different when you actually get your hands dirty. Glad I spent the time figuring it out myself instead of just reading about it.
