Today, I want to talk about a golf format that I tried out recently. It’s called a “shamble,” and it’s a pretty fun way to play with a group of friends. Basically, we all teed off as usual, but then things got interesting.
After everyone hit their tee shots, we walked down the fairway and figured out which one was the best. Usually, it was the one that went the farthest and was in the best position, no big surprise there. Once we picked the best drive, we all moved our balls to that spot.

From there, everyone played their own ball for the rest of the hole, just like a regular round of golf. We kept track of our individual scores, but the real focus was on the team score.
How We Scored It
Scoring was a bit different. Before we started, everyone figured out their handicap. Then, each of us took our handicap and multiplied it by 0.8, I think they call it the “course handicap.” We added up those adjusted handicaps to get our team handicap. After finishing the round, we totaled up the best scores on each hole from our team members. Finally, we subtracted our team handicap from our total gross score to get our net score. And that was our team’s final score for the shamble.
Team Strategy
- We tried to put together a team with a mix of skills.
- Having a couple of long hitters was definitely helpful for getting that best drive.
- It also helped to have some people who were really good with their short game, since everyone was playing their own ball from the same spot.
At the end of the day, the shamble format made for a fun and relaxed round of golf. It was less pressure than a regular round since we were working as a team. Plus, it gave us a chance to strategize a bit and play from some good positions on the course. I’d definitely recommend trying it out if you’re looking for something different to do with your golf buddies. We had a blast, and I think you will too!
I definitely want to play more shambles in the future. It’s a great way to mix things up and enjoy the game in a new way.
