Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into this “Ashton Lewis Golf” thing for a while now. I kept seeing it pop up, and it looked interesting, so I finally decided to give it a shot. Here’s how it went down.
Getting Started
First, I needed to figure out what this even was. I did some digging, and it turns out it’s a two-person team golf format. Sounds simple enough, right? The gist is that both players tee off, then you pick the best drive, and then you alternate shots from there until you sink the ball. Teamwork makes the dream work, as they say.

Finding a Partner
I couldn’t do this alone, obviously. I hit up my buddy, Mark, who’s also trying to improve his golf game. He was in, so we picked a day and a course that worked for both of us. We’re both pretty average golfers, so we weren’t aiming for any records here.
The Big Day
We got to the course, warmed up a bit at the driving range (gotta loosen up those rusty joints!), and then headed to the first tee. I gotta admit, I was a little nervous. It’s one thing to mess up your own shot, but another to let your teammate down. We decided I’d tee off first on the even holes, and he’d go first on the odds.
Playing the Game
- Tee Off: Like I said, both of us tee off on each hole.
- Choosing the Best Drive: This was sometimes easy, sometimes… not so much. We tried to be strategic, thinking about the lie, distance to the green, and any hazards.
- Alternating Shots: This is where it got interesting. After picking the best drive, we took turns hitting. So, if Mark hit the drive we chose, I’d hit the next shot, then he’d hit, and so on.
- Keeping Score: We just kept track of the total number of strokes for each hole, just like regular golf.
The alternating shots part was definitely a new experience. It really forces you to think about your partner’s game and what kind of shot you’re leaving them with. A couple of times, I shanked one into the woods, leaving Mark with a tough recovery shot. (Sorry, Mark!). But other times, we worked together pretty well, setting each other up for easy putts.
The Results (and the Fun)
We didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard. Let’s just say we won’t be quitting our day jobs to join the pro tour anytime soon. But, honestly, the score wasn’t the point. We had a blast! It was a fun way to mix things up and try something different on the course. The back-and-forth, the strategizing, and even the occasional screw-ups made for a great day.
I’d definitely recommend giving Ashton Lewis Golf a try if you’re looking for a new way to play with a friend. It’s a good challenge, and a great way to spend a few hours outdoors. Plus, it’s always good to have someone to blame when you miss that two-foot putt! (Just kidding, Mark… mostly.)
