So, I’ve been meaning to get into boxing, just for fitness, you know? And I kept hearing about how important it is to have a “first name” in boxing. I was like, “Huh? What’s that even mean?” I figured it had to do with your stance or something, but I wasn’t sure, so I did a little digging and, man, it was simple than I thought.
Getting Started – The Research
First, I Googled the “first name in boxing”, I got some forum threads and articles talking about it. The information that I found is mainly focus on “the lead hand/foot”, I finally realized there is no such thing called “first name”, it’s just how you stand!

My Practice – Figuring It Out
I went to my empty garage and tried the boxing stance, tried to put the left foot forward, and jabbed a few times with my left hand.
- Left Foot Forward:I tried standing with my left foot forward, kinda like I was about to walk.
- Lead with Left hand: Then I tried jabbing with my left hand, kept my right hand up to guard my face like what I saw on YouTube.
The “Aha!” Moment
I switched to right foot, and jabbed with right hand.
- Right foot forward.
- Jabbed with right hand.
It suddenly clicked, so the “first name” is just the foot and hand you naturally lead with! It depends on your personal perference.
Putting It All Together
I spent the rest of the afternoon practicing. I felt awkward at first, kept thinking, “Am I doing this right?” The “First name” I used is keep my left hand and foot lead, I found that is more naturally for me.
It was a good start! Can’t wait to build more habit on it!
