So, I heard about this place called An Achievable Dream Tennis Center. I figured, why not give it a shot? I mean, I’ve always wanted to get into tennis, but never really knew where to start. This place is down at 1300 Ivy Ave in Newport News. I saw something online about them having some kind of community event from 2 to 5 in the afternoon, so I thought that would be a good time to check it out.
I grabbed my old racquet that had been sitting in the garage, collecting dust, and headed over there. I wasn’t sure what to expect, to be honest. When I got there, there were a bunch of people, some were kids, some were older, all kinds of folks. It looked like they were having a great time.

I walked around, kind of just observing at first. I saw a few people practicing their serves, others were rallying back and forth. It all seemed so…organized, you know? Not chaotic like I thought it might be. It was all pretty chill, to be honest. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the nice weather.
- There was this one group of people around 6 to 19 years old.
- It was a mix of boys and girls, all learning together.
- They were scheduled from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
- And guess what? They’re meeting on Tuesdays.
- They call it “Future Aces”.
I watched them for a bit, and they seemed to be getting some solid coaching. It looked like fun. I thought about joining in, but I felt a little rusty. Plus, I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of everyone.
I did see a sign that said “REGISTER NOW”, but I didn’t go up to it. I decided I’d just watch for a little longer and see if this was something I really wanted to get into. This place seems to be perfect for beginners like me. They mentioned indoor training on court, which sounds like it would be really helpful to get the basics down. Plus it’s free, which is awesome, I could save some money.
I mean, the staff seemed really into it, and they were helping everyone, from little kids to older folks. It seemed like they could really teach you, no matter your skill level. I hung around until the community event wrapped up, and then I headed home. I spent the rest of the day thinking about whether I should go back and actually sign up for some lessons. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and this place seems like the perfect opportunity.
It’s not every day you stumble upon something like this, right in your own backyard. I haven’t made up my mind yet, but I’m definitely leaning towards giving it a go. It just seems so achievable, you know? Like, maybe this could finally be my chance to learn how to play tennis. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get good at it.
