Alright, let’s talk about Dutch kickboxing. I’ve been messing around with it for a while now, and I figured I’d share my experience. So, I started looking into it ’cause it seemed like a good way to get in shape and learn some self-defense.
Getting Started
First off, I didn’t know much about it, so I did some digging. Watched a bunch of videos, read some articles, you know, the usual. Then, I found a local gym that offered classes. I signed up and showed up for my first class, feeling a bit nervous, not gonna lie.

The First Few Classes
Man, those first few classes were rough. I was sore in places I didn’t even know existed. But I stuck with it. The instructors were pretty cool, they broke down the basics for us newbies. We started with the basic stances, footwork, and punches.
- Stance: Feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, hands up.
- Footwork: Lots of shuffling, pivoting, and stepping.
- Punches: Jabs, crosses, hooks. We drilled these over and over.
Adding Kicks
Once we got the hang of the punches, they started throwing kicks into the mix. Low kicks, body kicks, head kicks. Let me tell you, getting kicked in the leg is no joke, even with shin guards on. We spent a lot of time practicing these on heavy bags and pads.
- Low Kicks: Aiming for the opponent’s thighs.
- Body Kicks: Going for the ribs or the stomach.
- Head Kicks: These are tough, gotta have good flexibility.
Putting It All Together
After a few weeks of drilling punches and kicks separately, we started combining them. That’s where the real fun began. Dutch kickboxing is all about combinations. Punch, punch, kick. Kick, punch, kick. You get the idea. It’s like a dance, but with, you know, violence.
Sparring
Then came sparring. This was a whole different ball game. Actually trying to hit someone who’s trying to hit you back is way harder than hitting a bag. I got punched in the face a few times, and I definitely landed a few good shots myself. It’s intense, but it’s also a great way to learn and improve.
Where I’m At Now
So, I’ve been doing this for a few months now. I’m still learning a lot, and I’m definitely in better shape than when I started. It’s tough, it’s challenging, but it’s also really rewarding. I feel more confident, more aware of my body, and I can throw a decent punch and kick now. If you’re thinking about trying it out, I say go for it. Just be prepared to work hard and maybe get a few bruises along the way.
