Alright, so listen up, y’all. I’m gonna tell ya ’bout this tennis match, somethin’ about a Fernandez girl and a Keys girl. Heard it on the radio, the fella was shoutin’ somethin’ fierce. Sounded important, so I figured I’d share what I know. Don’t expect no fancy talk, though. I ain’t got time for that.

So, this Fernandez girl, Leylah somethin’ or other, she’s from Canada, eh? Like them folks up north with the funny accents. Her daddy’s from some place called Ecuador, and her mama’s a Filipino-Canadian. Fancy, huh? Started playin’ tennis when she was just a little tyke, five years old they say. Ten years old, she was already competin’. Imagine that! A little bitty thing hittin’ them fuzzy balls. They say she’s a lefty, too. That’s gotta be tricky, swingin’ from the other side. And she’s quick! Like a bunny rabbit, that one.
Then there’s this Keys girl, Madison. She’s American, born and raised. They say she’s been ranked real high, number seven in the world at one point. That’s pretty darn good, I reckon. Been playin’ for a while, too. Born in ’95, so she’s been at it for a good long time. Must be strong as an ox, hittin’ them balls all day long.
Now, this match, it was in a place called Eastbourne. Sounds fancy. Over in England, I think they said. June 28th, that’s when it happened. Semifinals, they called it. Big deal, I guess. Folks were watchin’, cheerin’, makin’ a ruckus. I bet those girls were nervous as cats in a room full of rocking chairs.
- Fernandez girl, she’s quick, remember? Left-handed, too. That’s gotta give her an edge, don’t ya think?
- Keys girl, she’s strong. Been playin’ for years. Got that experience. That counts for somethin’.
So, they’re battlin’ it out, hittin’ that ball back and forth. Must be tirin’, all that runnin’ and swingin’. The radio fella was yellin’ about the scores, somethin’ like 5-7 and then 6-3. Sounds like it was a real nail-biter. I don’t know who won, to be honest. They talk so fast on the radio, it’s hard to keep up. But I heard somethin’ about the Fernandez girl droppin’ a set. Maybe the Keys girl won? Who knows.
But the thing is, these girls, they work hard. They practice and practice, day in and day out. Just like us, when we’re out there in the fields, workin’ from sunup to sundown. It takes dedication, you know? And guts. Gotta be brave to stand out there in front of all them people, swingin’ that racket and hopin’ for the best.

I tell ya, these tennis folks, they live in a different world than us. Fancy clothes, fancy places. But hard work is hard work, no matter where you are or what you do. Whether you’re hittin’ a tennis ball or plantin’ corn, you gotta give it your all. And that’s what I admire about these girls, even if I don’t understand all their fancy rules and lingo. They’re out there, givin’ it their all. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
So, next time you hear about a tennis match, maybe you’ll think about them girls, Fernandez and Keys. And you’ll remember that even though their lives might be different from ours, we all got somethin’ in common: the will to work hard and the courage to chase our dreams. That’s all I gotta say about that.
