Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into shape, and I heard about this boxing gym, Davis Boxing, in DC. I figured, why not? Let’s give it a shot. I’m not getting any younger, you know?
First thing I did was, I looked them up. Found their address, checked out some pictures online. It looked pretty legit, all serious and stuff. I even watched a couple of videos of people training there. Made me a little nervous, to be honest, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right?

So, I went down there. It’s in this… kind of industrial-looking building. Not fancy, but you could tell it was all about the boxing. I walked in, and the smell of sweat and leather hit me. It was intense! There were heavy bags hanging everywhere, a ring in the middle, and people were working. I mean, really going at it.
I talked to this guy at the front desk, super friendly. He explained the different classes they had – beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I obviously signed up for beginner. No shame in that! He gave me a tour, showed me the locker rooms, the showers, everything. It was all pretty basic, but clean and functional.
My First Class
Man, was I nervous. I put on my workout clothes – just some old shorts and a t-shirt – and joined the class. The instructor, a big, muscular dude named Mike, started us off with a warm-up. Jumping jacks, push-ups, the whole deal. I was already sweating buckets!
Then we got into the actual boxing stuff. Mike showed us the basic stance, how to throw a jab, a cross, a hook. He made it look so easy! It was a lot harder than it looks, let me tell you. My arms were burning, my legs were shaking, and I was gasping for air. But you know what? It felt good.
We spent some time hitting the heavy bags. That was…intense. Trying to get the rhythm right, keep my guard up, throw the punches correctly. It was a lot to think about. Mike kept coming around, correcting our form, giving us tips. He was tough, but encouraging.
- Stance: Feet shoulder-width apart, one foot slightly in front of the other.
- Guard: Hands up, protecting your face.
- Jab: A quick, straight punch with your lead hand.
- Cross: A powerful punch with your rear hand.
- Hook:A semi-circular punch with your elbow bent.
By the end of the class, I was completely wiped out. But I also felt amazing. I’d pushed myself, learned something new, and actually had fun. I even made a couple of friends in the class. We were all struggling together, so that created a bond, I guess.
I’ve been going to Davis Boxing for a few weeks now, and I’m loving it. I’m still a beginner, of course, but I’m getting better. My punches are stronger, my stamina is improving, and I’m actually starting to look forward to the workouts. It’s tough, but it’s worth it. Maybe someday I’ll even be able to spar in the ring. Who knows?
