Well, well, well, it’s that time again! The year 2023 saw some real fireworks in the world of girls’ tennis, especially when it comes to the PIAA Girls Tennis State Championship. I tell ya, it’s been a season full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and plenty of young gals showing off what they’ve got on that court.

Now, I ain’t no tennis expert, but I sure do know when to sit down and watch some good ol’ fashioned competition. The PIAA, which stands for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, really pulled out all the stops this year. Girls from all over the state came together to battle it out for the top prize, and let me tell you, the competition was fierce. From singles matches to doubles, it was a real sight to see!
First thing’s first, let’s talk about the big names. There was Grace Li from Unionville High School, who wrapped up her time with the Longhorns with a bang. She’s been playing for a long time, and you could see the experience in every swing she took. There’s nothing like watching someone who knows their way around a tennis court, and Grace sure made her mark in 2023.
And don’t even get me started on the team tournaments! You had teams like Conestoga and Council Rock South, who found themselves in a rematch after battling it out in the District 1 3A finals. Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a rematch in tennis, but let me tell you, it’s something. The players know each other’s moves like the back of their hand, and every serve and return seems to have that extra bit of tension. You could feel the heat on the court!
The brackets this year were something else, too. You could find the full brackets online, and let me tell you, they were packed with excitement. From the first rounds to the final matches, there were plenty of close calls and nail-biting moments. Some of these gals, they got a real fire in them, and you could tell they were out there to win.
And speaking of close calls, don’t forget about the singles championships! Addison Lindsay, a freshman from Central Mountain, earned herself a silver medal in the PIAA 3A singles championship. Now, that’s no small feat! She was up against some tough competition, but she held her ground and showed everyone that she’s got a bright future ahead of her in tennis. I reckon we’ll be hearing a lot more about her in the coming years!

There’s also the matter of the doubles! You can’t forget the doubles teams. Tennis is a whole different ballgame when you’ve got someone else by your side. The coordination, the teamwork – it’s a real test of how well two players can come together. Some of the best moments in the tournament came from doubles teams working together like a well-oiled machine, making those quick reflex plays that leave you thinking, “Did they really just do that?”
And let’s not forget the coaches. Behind every champion, there’s a coach pushing them to be their best. Nick Werner from Wyoming Seminary, coaching girls and boys alike, really made his mark this year. His guidance has been key to many players’ success, and it shows when they step out on the court. You can tell a good coach by how their players perform under pressure, and let me tell you, these girls have been trained well!
Now, I know I’ve gone on a bit here, but there’s just so much to say! The PIAA Girls Tennis State Championship for 2023 was truly a sight to behold. These young ladies didn’t just play tennis – they gave it their all, they fought, they pushed through the tough matches, and in the end, they earned their spots in the history books. Whether it was a singles match, doubles, or the team tournaments, they all played like champions. And I think we can all agree, we’re looking forward to what next year’s tournament will bring. So, here’s to the 2023 champions and all the players who gave it their best – you did us proud!
