So, I figured I’d share something I did the other weekend. Ended up going to a Bernards High School football game. Yeah, totally random for me, I know. Usually, I’m just tinkering around the house or trying to figure out my next project, but the weather was nice, kinda crisp, you know, perfect fall evening. Heard some buzz around town about the game, saw a few signs, and thought, why not?
Getting there wasn’t too bad, though parking was a bit of a scavenger hunt, like always with these school events. Found a spot eventually, a bit of a walk, but hey, stretched the legs. As soon as I got closer to the field, you could just feel the energy. It wasn’t like a pro game or anything intense like that, more like a real community thing. Lots of families, students all hyped up, people bundled in blankets already even though it wasn’t that cold yet.

Grabbed some hot chocolate – gotta do that, right? – and found a spot on the bleachers. They weren’t super comfy, but that’s part of the charm, I guess. The game started up, and honestly, I wasn’t tracking every single play like a hawk. It was more about the whole scene. The marching band was playing during breaks, the cheerleaders were doing their thing, and you just heard the roar of the crowd whenever something good happened for the home team.
Watching the Game Vibe
There was this one play, I think someone made a long run for a touchdown, and the place just went nuts. It was pretty cool to see that kinda local spirit. Everyone cheering together, high-fiving strangers next to them. It’s simple stuff, but it felt good, you know? Just being part of something straightforward and fun for a couple of hours.
Didn’t even care much who won by the end, though I think Bernards did pull it off. The scoreboard wasn’t really my focus. It was more just soaking in that small-town Friday night lights atmosphere. Felt kinda nostalgic, even though my own high school experience was nothing like this. We didn’t have this kind of turnout or excitement around sports back then, or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.
Anyway, walked back to the car feeling pretty good. Just a simple night out, watching some kids play their hearts out, feeling connected to the local scene for a bit. Definitely beats scrolling mindlessly on the phone, that’s for sure. Might have to do it again sometime before the season’s over. Just a nice reminder of the simple things.
