Alright, let’s talk about this… this… “Aaron Judge Topps SMLB-14” thing. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But lemme tell ya, it’s just a picture on a piece of cardboard. Yep, that’s what it is. My grandson, he’s all excited about these things. Calls ’em “trading cards”. Kids these days, always finding new ways to spend their money, I tell ya.

So, this Aaron Judge fella, he plays baseball for the… uh… New York… something-or-others. Yankees, that’s it! He’s a big fella, hits the ball real far. My grandson says he’s real good. I wouldn’t know, I ain’t watched a baseball game since… well, since your grandpa was still around. And that was a long, long time ago.
Now, this “SMLB-14” card… it’s from 2022, they say. Part of some “Stars of MLB” set. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me, but the boy says it’s special. Says it’s got a picture of Aaron Judge on it, lookin’ all serious-like. And it’s got some number on it too, SMLB-14, whatever that means. Probably just a way to make it sound important so they can charge more money for it, you know how them city folks are.
- They say you can buy it on eBay.
- And some other place called “*”.
- Sounds like a whole lotta trouble to me.
My grandson, he keeps talkin’ about “rare” cards and “autographs” and all that. Says this Aaron Judge card might be worth somethin’ someday. I tell him, “Boy, you’re better off savin’ your money for a good pair of shoes or a warm coat.” But he don’t listen. Kids never do, do they?
They say these cards are made of “high-quality card stock.” Well, I reckon that just means it’s thick paper. And they say it’s “standard size.” Means it ain’t too big and ain’t too small, just right for fittin’ in your pocket, I guess. Though why you’d wanna carry a picture of a baseball player in your pocket is beyond me.
Now, they also talk about “prices” and “historic sales”. Sounds like they’re treatin’ these cards like they’re gold or somethin’. They got some fancy way of figurin’ out how much each card is worth, some “proprietary algorithm,” they call it. Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. Back in my day, a picture was just a picture, nothin’ more, nothin’ less.

And folks are “collecting” these cards, they say. Got whole albums full of ’em. My grandson, he’s got a whole box, all organized and everything. Spends hours lookin’ at ’em, tradin’ ’em with his friends. I tell ya, it’s a whole different world these days. We used to collect stamps or coins, things that had some real value. But these cards… well, I guess they got value to some folks.
So, this Aaron Judge Topps SMLB-14 card… it’s just a baseball card, plain and simple. Picture of a fella hittin’ a ball. But to some folks, it’s more than that. It’s a piece of history, they say. A collectible. An investment. Me? I just see a piece of cardboard. But hey, if it makes my grandson happy, then I guess it can’t be all bad. Just as long as he don’t spend all his money on it, that’s all I’m sayin’. And maybe, just maybe, one day that piece of cardboard will be worth enough to buy him a good pair of shoes after all.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about this here Aaron Judge card. It’s a thing, that’s for sure. And folks seem to like it. So there you have it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. Got a pot of beans on the stove that needs tendin’ to.
