Well, look at this, the Wisconsin Badgers football team, eh? Got this here “depth chart” thing they’re talking about. Sounds fancy, but lemme tell ya, it’s just a way of figurin’ out who’s gonna be playin’ and who’s gonna be sittin’ on the bench. Like when we used to pick teams for kickball back in the day, only with more helmets and less screamin’ kids… mostly.
Now, they got all these fellas lined up. Like this Green, Bryson fella, a senior they say. Senior means he’s been around the block, knows his stuff. He’s a WR-X, whatever that means. Probably means he catches the ball, ain’t too many other things to do out there on that field, ‘cept maybe runnin’ and smashin’ into each other. Then there’s Anthony II, Vinny. Junior, they call him. Still got some learnin’ to do, I reckon. He’s a WR-Z. Maybe Z is for zippin’ fast? I dunno.

- WR-SL: Pauling, Will (Redshirt Junior)
- LT: Nelson (No first name, huh? Must be a tough fella)
And this Pauling, Will, he’s a “redshirt junior.” Sounds like he got held back a year or somethin’. Maybe he wasn’t eat his vegetables. Always gotta eat your vegetables, that’s what I say. They got a whole bunch of ’em listed, all these fellers with their positions. LT, that’s probably one of them big guys, the ones that push and shove. This one’s name is just Nelson. No first name? Must be one tough cookie, don’t need no fancy first name.
This here “depth chart,” it tells ya who’s gonna start, who’s gonna come in if the starter gets a boo-boo, and so on. Like a backup plan, ya know? Gotta have a backup plan for everything in life. Like when the milk goes sour, ya gotta have some powdered stuff in the pantry. Same thing with football, I guess.
They gonna be playin’ at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. That’s a big place, I hear. Lots of folks screamin’ and yellin’. Reminds me of the county fair, only with less cows and more… well, you get the picture. They sayin’ the game’s gonna be on TV, on NBC. And on somethin’ called Peacock. Sounds like a fancy bird. I ain’t got no Peacock, just got my old TV with the rabbit ears.
This team, the Badgers, they been pretty good, seems like. Been to a lot of “bowl games.” Bowls? Are they playin’ football in bowls now? I tell ya, things change so fast these days. Back in my day, a bowl was somethin’ you put soup in. But I guess if they wanna play football in bowls, that’s their business. As long as they ain’t breakin’ nothin’ too important.
They’re playin’ against the Ducks, they say. Ducks? Like them quackin’ things down by the pond? This is gettin’ weirder and weirder. But I guess it’s all in good fun. People like to watch young fellas runnin’ around and throwin’ a ball. Me? I prefer a good game of checkers, but to each their own, I always say.
So, this “depth chart,” it’s important stuff, see? It tells ya who’s who and what’s what. And it helps the coaches figure out how to win them games. And winnin’ is important, I reckon. Nobody wants to be a loser. Even in checkers, you wanna win. But even if you don’t win, well, at least you tried. That’s what my mama always told me. And mama knew best, even if she didn’t know nothin’ about no “depth charts” or “WR-Xs” or “Peacocks.” She just knew about hard work and good food and bein’ kind to folks. And that’s more important than any football game, if you ask me.
Anyways, this whole “depth chart” thing, seems like a lot of fuss over who gets to play where. But I guess it matters to them fellas and to the folks who watch ’em. Me? I’ll just stick to my checkers and my powdered milk. Less complicated that way.
2024 Wisconsin Badgers Football, huh? Sounds like they got a whole season ahead of ’em. Hope they do good. Hope they don’t get hurt too bad. And hope they remember to eat their vegetables. That’s the key to success, I tell ya. Vegetables and a good night’s sleep.
So, there you have it. My take on this “depth chart” thing. Probably ain’t what them fancy sportswriters would say, but it’s the truth as I see it. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it? The truth. Even if it’s a little bit… well, you know… like me.
