Alright, so you wanna know about this Austin Jones fella, the baseball umpire? Okay, okay, I’ll tell ya what I know. Don’t expect no fancy words from me, I just talk plain.
Now, from what I hear, this Austin Jones, he’s been umpin’ games for a good while. They say he worked in some league, the “Appa… Appa… somethin’ League” back in 2015. Sounds like a small-time thing, you know, where the young fellas start out.
He’s been around, this Austin Jones. I saw somethin’ about him umpin’ in different conferences, some ranked higher, some lower. They even had numbers for ‘em, like 16th, 20th, 18th. Guess that means he’s seen all sorts of games, good ones and bad ones.
- They got all sorts of numbers for him, you know, like his age, how tall he is, how much he weighs. Like they do for them baseball players. I ain’t got no time for that stuff, but some folks like to know, I guess.
- Oh, and this Austin fella, he ain’t alone. He’s got a twin brother, Tyler! Imagine that, two of ‘em lookin’ the same. Maybe Tyler umpires too, who knows?
I heard tell they even got bets on these umpires now. Can you believe it? Betting on whether a fella calls a ball or a strike. The world’s gone crazy, I tell ya. And this Austin Jones, they got betting stats for him too. People figurin’ out if he’s likely to call this way or that way. It’s a whole ‘nother game on top of the real game, if you ask me.
They’re always changin’ things in baseball, ain’t they? Now they’re talkin’ about robot umpires! Imagine that, machines callin’ balls and strikes. What’s next, robots hittin’ the ball too? This Austin Jones and the other umpires, they might be out of a job soon enough. Though, I heard they’re gonna keep tryin’ it out in spring training next year, in a bunch of ballparks. And they’re gonna let the umpires talk to the crowd and the folks watchin’ on TV when they’re lookin’ at those replays. Guess that’ll be somethin’ new to see.
They also got these things called “Era Committees” and they pick folks to go into some “Hall of Fame”. They picked all sorts, players, managers, even some umpires made it in there. Maybe one day Austin Jones will be good enough to get in there too, who knows. He’s gotta work hard though, and make the right calls, I reckon.
Anyways, that’s about all I got on this Austin Jones. He’s an umpire, he’s been around, he’s got a twin brother, and folks bet on him. He’s just a fella doin’ his job, like the rest of us. Just tryin’ to make a livin’, I guess. And who knows, maybe he’ll be famous one day, or maybe he’ll just keep on callin’ balls and strikes. It ain’t my business to say.
There’s this other umpire fella, James Michael Wolf, they talk about sometimes when they talk about umpires. Don’t know what he’s got to do with Austin Jones, but they’re both umpires, so maybe they know each other. This baseball world, it’s a small world, I tell ya.
