Okay, so today I decided to get back on the court and play some tennis. It’s been a while, so I was a little rusty, but I wanted to document the whole process. Call it my “aum tennis” journey, whatever that means, I’ll let the process be a mantra.
Getting Started
First things first, I had to find my gear. Dug through the closet and pulled out my old racquet, which, thankfully, was still in decent shape. I also found a couple of cans of balls that seemed okay – gave them a bounce test, and they passed, kinda.

Next, I headed to the local park. I use this word “headed” like I sprinted. It was more of a leisurely walk. I got there, and luckily, a court was free. Score!
Hitting the Court
I started with some warm-up serves. Oh boy, were they rough. The first few went straight into the net. It was clear that I will need to improve my serve. Gradually I started hitting the ball, aiming for the service box. Some landed in, most didn’t. No biggie, just getting the feel back.
- Serve practice – mostly fails, a few successes.
- Need to work on consistency.
After serves, I practiced some forehands and backhands. My forehand used to be my strong suit, but today, it felt… off. The timing was weird, and the power wasn’t there. My backhand was even worse – definitely need to work on that two-handed grip.
I tried to rally with myself, hitting the ball against the wall. That helped a bit with rhythm and getting used to the feel of the racquet again. It wasn’t pretty, but it was something.
Wrapping Up
After about an hour, I was pretty tired. I decided to call it a day. I didn’t play any actual games, just focused on getting the basics back. It was frustrating at times, but also kind of fun. I got a practice in, a tiny work out and a clear picture of where I can improve.
Overall, it was a good start. I’m definitely not ready for Wimbledon, but that’s okay. It’s about the process, right? I plan to go back next week and do it all over again, hopefully with some improvement.
