So today I tried out that David Abell guy’s golf advice everyone’s talking about. Honestly, I was kinda doubtful at first, you know? Another quick fix promise. But my scores lately… oof.
Digging into the Plan
Started by watching his main video tip. Seemed simple enough: get better balance before swinging. He kept hammering on about getting your feet planted right before you even think about pulling the club back. Kept saying it was key for not swaying all over the place. Made sense, I guess. My last few rounds felt like I was swinging on a boat.
Giving it a Whirl at the Range
Grabbed my old 7-iron first. Figured I’d start easy.
- Step 1: Set the ball down. Didn’t even pick up the club yet. Just stood there like an idiot, feeling my feet. Shifted weight a bit, rocked my toes and heels. Felt super awkward, like I was pretending to be on solid ground.
- Step 2: Finally put hands on the club. Focused hard on keeping my feet quiet while slowly pulling back. Halfway back, caught myself starting to tilt sideways like usual. Stopped dead. Reset. Focused back on the feet. This part sucked – felt stiff and unnatural.
- Step 3: Tried the actual swing. Slow motion. First couple? Duffed them big time, barely scraped the turf. Frustrating. But then… third try? Thud. Clean contact. Ball flew surprisingly straight, even if it wasn’t far. Kept going:
- Focus on feet first.
- Start back slow.
- Try not to wobble.
- Swiiiiing.
Honestly, maybe 2 out of 5 shots weren’t total garbage? But those two felt solid. Way less of those embarrassing hooks and slices.
Did it Actually Work?
Went out for 9 holes right after, before the weird new foot feeling wore off. Focused purely on that balance thing before each shot. Driver off the tee? Usually a gamble. First hole? Smacked it pretty much down the middle. Not a rocket, but playable. Felt amazing.
Still had some crappy shots, don’t get me wrong. Old habits die hard. That sway creeps back in when you rush. Par 3 over water? Got nervous, forgot the feet, chunked it splash. Classic me.
But overall? Ended up 5 strokes lower than my average for those 9 holes. Seriously. Didn’t magically make me a pro, but felt less like a disaster. Real key is gonna be keeping this up. It’s tiring paying that much attention to your feet constantly, but hey, if it works, it works.
Gotta hit the range again tomorrow, make this feel less weird. Still slicing the woods sometimes though. Maybe that’s next week’s Abell video.
