My Kickboxing Tryout in Eugene
Alright, so I decided I needed to shake things up a bit. Sitting around wasn’t doing me any favors, you know? I’d heard folks talking about kickboxing, how it’s a good workout and all that. I was in Eugene, Oregon at the time, so I figured, why not give it a shot right here?
Finding a place wasn’t too hard. Asked around a little, saw a few gyms mentioned. Picked one that seemed okay, not too fancy, not too rough looking. Just kinda… normal. Showed up one afternoon, feeling a little unsure but mostly just wanting to hit something, honestly.

Walked in. Smelled like sweat and determination, just like a gym should. People were busy, some wrapping their hands, others already going at the heavy bags. Seemed like a decent crowd. Got myself signed in and changed. Bought some cheap hand wraps there because, well, I didn’t have any.
Getting Started – The Warm-up
The coach gathered us newbies. First thing was warming up. Lots of jumping jacks, high knees, butt kicks – the usual stuff to get the blood pumping. Then some dynamic stretching, arm circles, leg swings. Felt good to loosen up, even though I was already starting to breathe heavy. We did some shadow boxing too, just throwing punches in the air. Felt kinda silly at first, but watching the others, I got into it.
Learning the Moves
Then came the actual teaching part. The coach showed us the basic stance. Feet shoulder-width apart, one slightly forward, hands up protecting the face. Simple, right? Harder to remember when you’re actually trying to hit something.
We worked on the basics:
- The Jab: Quick punch with the lead hand. Snap it out, bring it back.
- The Cross: Power punch with the rear hand, twisting the body.
- Hooks: Swinging punches aimed at the side.
- Uppercuts: Upward punches. Felt awkward.
- Basic Kicks: Mostly front kicks and some attempts at roundhouse kicks. Kicking was harder than punching for me, balance felt off.
We practiced these first in the air, then moved to the heavy bags. Man, hitting that bag felt good. Taking out some frustration, you know? The coach walked around, giving little tips. “Keep your hands up!” “Twist your hips more!” Simple stuff, but helpful.
After bag work, we partnered up for some pad work. One person holds the pads, the other hits them following combinations the coach called out. Jab-cross. Jab-cross-hook. Added in some kicks. This was tiring. My arms started feeling heavy pretty quick. My partner was cool, though, we took turns and tried to keep the energy up.
Winding Down
Towards the end, the pace slowed. We did some core work – planks, crunches. My abs were burning. Then a final cool-down stretch. Holding stretches felt necessary by then. My shoulders, legs, everywhere felt worked.

By the time it was over, I was drenched in sweat and totally wiped out. But you know what? It felt great. Like I’d actually done something. Muscles were already starting to feel that good kind of sore. Left the place feeling tired but really clear-headed. Definitely thinking I’ll head back next week. It’s a tough workout, but pretty satisfying.
