Alright, spent a good chunk of time today wrestling with that “turning stone” technique again. Honestly, I almost skipped it. Some days you just don’t feel like facing the stuff you know you’re bad at, you know?

Got my wraps on, gloves too. Just shadowboxing at first, trying to get loose. The air felt a bit heavy today, or maybe that was just me dragging my feet. Moved around the garage space, usual routine. Warm-up felt okay, nothing special.

Getting into the ‘Stone’

Then came the time to actually practice the turn. It’s this pivot thing, trying to get power into the hook while keeping my damn feet sorted. Feels like my legs are stuck in concrete sometimes.

My first few tries were clumsy. Like, really clumsy. Over-rotated on one, nearly tripped. Then under-rotated the next, felt like I had zero power, just flailing an arm. It’s frustrating, man. You think you get it, then you try it for real, and it all falls apart. It’s supposed to feel solid, grounded, but able to whip around – like turning a heavy stone smoothly on its base. Mine felt more like kicking the stone and stubbing my toe.

The Grind Part

So, I just kept at it. Slowed it right down. Like, painfully slow. Focused purely on the feet first.

  • Plant the lead foot.
  • Start the turn from the hip, feeling the pressure shift.
  • Let the back foot pivot, don’t lift it too much.
  • Keep the core tight – this part’s always tough to remember in the moment.

Did that maybe fifty times? Lost count. Just focusing on the feel of it. Ignored the hook part for a while, just the body mechanics. Sweat was dripping quite a bit by then. Had to grab a towel.

A Little Progress Maybe?

And then, something sort of clicked. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. But there were a few reps where it felt… connected. The power seemed to flow from the floor, through my legs, core, and into where the fist would be. It felt less like fighting myself and more like a single, solid movement. The ‘stone’ turned a little easier, you could say.

Didn’t suddenly become a pro at it or anything. Still messed it up plenty after that brief moment. But seeing that glimmer of ‘oh, that’s how it’s supposed to feel’ – that’s the stuff that keeps you going, right? Packed it up after that. Felt better than when I started, which is always a win.

It’s funny how some days the biggest fight is just getting yourself to practice the hard bits. Today was one of those, but glad I pushed through. That little bit of progress makes the grind worth it. Tomorrow, maybe it’ll feel a tiny bit less like wrestling a rock.
