Okay, so I’ve been getting into both tennis and pickleball lately, thought I’d share my experience, It’s been a real mixed bag, let me tell you!
Getting Started
First off, finding places to play was the initial hurdle. For tennis, I checked out some local parks with courts. Some were in decent shape, others… not so much. I also looked into a few clubs, but the membership fees were a bit steep for me at this point.

Pickleball was a bit trickier. I heard it was popular, but didn’t see many dedicated courts around. I ended up finding a community center that had some taped lines on a gym floor – not ideal, but it worked!
The Gear
- Tennis: I dusted off an old racquet I had in the garage. It wasn’t fancy, but it did the job. I did buy a new can of balls, though – those things lose their bounce fast!
- Pickleball:I borrow the paddle from * felt weird at first, so small and light. I also saw some people with fancy, expensive paddles, but I’m sticking with the basics for now.
Playing the Games
Tennis felt… familiar. I’d played a bit in high school, so the basic strokes came back to me, I was hitting the ball over the net… most of the time. My serve was atrocious, though. Lots of double faults, and my backhand? Let’s just say it needs work,
Pickleball was a whole different animal,The smaller court and underhand serve made it feel… less intimidating, to be honest. I picked up the basic rules pretty quickly , I was actually having some decent rallies! It’s definitely easier on the joints than tennis, which is a plus.
The Struggle is Real
Here’s the thing: I’m not exactly in peak physical condition. Tennis wore me out – fast. All that running around! I was sore for days after my first real match. Pickleball was less intense, but I still found myself getting winded after a few games.
The Verdict (So Far)
Both sports are fun, in their own ways. Tennis feels like a “real” workout, a test of skill and endurance. Pickleball is more… social, I guess? Easier to pick up, and you can have some fun without being a super athlete. I’ll probably keep playing both, at least until I get in better shape… or my knees give out.
