Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make some Apollo Creed boxing trunks for a while now. I’m a huge Rocky fan, and those iconic American flag shorts are just so cool. I figured, “Hey, I can do that!” So, I started this little project, and man, it was a journey.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to figure out what I was actually doing. I’m no sewing expert, I can barely sew a button back on, so this was a bit daunting. I started by watching a bunch of YouTube videos. You know, those DIY costume tutorials. Some were helpful, some were…not so much.

After a few hours of “research,” I felt like I had a slightly better grasp on the situation. I needed:
- Red, white, and blue fabric. Lots of it.
- Some kind of elastic waistband. Comfort is key, even when you’re pretending to be a boxing legend.
- A sewing machine. Borrowed one from my mom. Thanks, Mom!
- A pattern. I tried to freehand it at first, and let’s just say that didn’t go well.
- Stars and Stripes need to be cut
The Messy Middle
Okay, so I got all my materials. I found a basic shorts pattern online and printed it out. It looked simple enough, but cutting the fabric was a nightmare. Fabric everywhere! Red, white, and blue confetti all over my living room. My cat was not impressed.
Then came the sewing. Oh boy. Let me tell you, that sewing machine had a mind of its own. The thread kept breaking, the needle got jammed, and I’m pretty sure I sewed one of the legs on backward at one point. I had to rip out seams more times than I care to admit.
The stars were another challenge. I decided to go with fabric paint for those, thinking it would be easier than sewing them on. Big mistake. The paint bled, the stars looked wonky, and I ended up with blue paint all over my hands. It looked like I’d fought a Smurf.
The (Almost) Finished Product
After many, many hours of frustration, and several near-meltdowns, I finally had something that resembled boxing trunks. They weren’t perfect, not by a long shot. The stitching was a little crooked, the stars were a bit…abstract, and the waistband was a tad too tight. But you know what? I made them! They are uniquely made by ME.
I put them on, did a little shadow boxing in the mirror, and felt pretty darn proud of myself. Even if they wouldn’t hold up in an actual boxing match, they were good enough for me. It was a fun project, even with all the hiccups. And hey, now I have a cool pair of Apollo Creed-inspired shorts. Plus, I learned a thing or two about sewing, and a whole lot about patience.
