So, the other day I got this wild idea to make some “tennis ball candy.” Sounds weird, right? But I was thinking, how cool would it be to have candy that looks just like tiny tennis balls? I’m always up for a kitchen adventure, so I decided to give it a shot.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to figure out what to use as the base for these candies. I thought about using those premade cake pops, but that seemed like cheating. Plus, I wanted something a bit more… chewy. Then it hit me – why not use some kind of chewy candy, like a gumdrop or something similar? I ran to the store and grabbed a bag of large gumdrops, the kind you usually see around holidays.

Shaping the Balls
Once I had my gumdrops, the real fun began. I started by rolling them between my hands to warm them up a little. This made them softer and easier to shape. Then, I just started squishing and molding them into little spheres. It took a bit of practice, but I eventually got the hang of it. They weren’t perfectly round, but hey, that just added to their charm, right?
Adding the Tennis Ball Look
Now came the tricky part – making these things actually look like tennis balls. I knew I needed some kind of white lines to mimic the seams. I thought about using frosting, but that seemed too messy. Then, I remembered I had some white candy melts left over from another project. Perfect! I melted those down, put the melted candy in a small zip-top bag, and snipped off a tiny corner to make a makeshift piping bag.
Creating the Seams
- I carefully piped two curved lines around each gumdrop sphere, trying to make them look like the seams on a real tennis ball.
- It was definitely a test of patience, and my lines weren’t exactly perfect, but you could get the general idea.
The Final Touch
After the white lines set, I thought something was still missing. Real tennis balls have that fuzzy texture, right? To replicate that, I grabbed some green sanding sugar – the kind you use for decorating cookies. I poured some into a shallow dish and gently rolled each candy ball in the sugar. This gave them a slightly textured look, which I thought was pretty neat.
The Taste Test
Finally, it was time to taste my creation! I popped one in my mouth, and you know what? It wasn’t half bad! The gumdrop was chewy and sweet, and the sanding sugar added a nice little crunch. They definitely weren’t the prettiest candies I’d ever made, but they were fun to make, and they tasted pretty good, too.
All in all, I’d say my tennis ball candy experiment was a success. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon, and I ended up with some unique treats to share with my friends. Would I make them again? Maybe! It was definitely a learning experience, and who knows, maybe next time I’ll get those lines a little straighter.
