OK, so, I was curious about this whole “MVR” thing in baseball. I mean, I’ve heard the term thrown around a bunch, especially when people are talking about the best players in Major League Baseball (MLB), but I never really took the time to figure out what it meant. So, today I decided to do some digging and figure it out.
First, I tried to recall what I already knew about MLB awards. I remembered something about an award being given since 1957 and that it involved managers and coaches voting. But that was about it. Not much to go on.

So, I jumped online and started searching. Turns out, MVR is a typo, and it’s actually MVP which stands for “Most Valuable Player.” Now we’re getting somewhere!
I learned that the MVP award is a really big deal in MLB. It’s given out every year to the best player in both the American League and the National League. Apparently, it’s been around for a long, long time. They had something called the “Chalmers Award” way back in 1911, and then the “League Award” in the 1920s. But the MVP award we know today started in 1931, and it’s been run by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) ever since.
What’s interesting is that there’s no strict rule on how to decide who’s the MVP. It’s totally up to each voter from the BBWAA to decide. They think about who was the most valuable player to their team, which makes sense. I also found out that managers and coaches pick players for different awards, but they can’t vote for their own team’s players. Seems fair enough.
I also stumbled upon some information about a thing called “Modified Coach Pitch” (MCP) for younger kids, like 5-6 year-olds, but that was just a small side thing. I was mostly interested in the big-league MVP.
Wrapping my head around all this, I realized that the MVP award is a huge honor in baseball. It’s a way to recognize those players who really stand out and make a big difference for their teams. And it’s cool that it’s been around for so long, it is a tradition, you know?
So, yeah, that’s what I learned about the MLB MVP award today. It was a good little research session. Now, next time I hear someone talking about the MVP, I’ll actually know what’s going on! This searching makes me feel like a real baseball expert now, haha.
