Okay, so, I got into this whole Lani Chang tennis thing. You know, Michael Chang’s daughter? Yeah, that’s the one. I started digging around because, well, everyone’s talking about her, and I was curious. Turns out, this kid’s only 13, but she’s already making waves.
So, first thing I did was just watch some videos online. I mean, that’s where you start these days, right? You can see her playing, see her style. And let me tell you, she’s got some serious game. Then, I started looking into her training, because obviously, she’s not just out there winging it. That’s where we talk about her dad.

- Her dad, Michael Chang, is like tennis royalty. Won the French Open back in ’89, youngest guy ever to win a Grand Slam. Plus, he was the first Asian player to break into the top 10 world rankings. So, yeah, he knows a thing or two about tennis. And now he’s coaching his daughter.
- Her mom, Amber Liu, isn’t a slouch either. She was a big deal in college tennis, winning a couple of individual championships and a few team titles at Stanford. So, tennis is definitely in Lani’s blood.
Next, I tried to find out where she trains, what tournaments she’s played in, that kind of stuff. It’s a bit tricky since she’s still a junior, but from what I could gather, she’s been playing in some local tournaments around Mission Viejo. I mean, you gotta start somewhere, right?
From Mission Viejo to the Court
I watched some interviews with her dad, and he seems really focused on keeping things balanced for her. He talks about the importance of school, of having a normal life outside of tennis. Which, I gotta say, I respect. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype, especially when you’re as talented as she is.
What I really wanted to do was to get her playing style. I watched, and watched, and watched some match videos. I’m no expert, but she seems really aggressive on the court. She’s not afraid to go for her shots, and she’s got a pretty powerful serve for a 13-year-old. It’s actually quite impressive.
And that’s pretty much where I’m at now. I’m following her journey, watching her progress. It’s gonna be interesting to see how she develops over the next few years. She’s definitely one to watch, that’s for sure. This whole thing just got me thinking about how tough it must be to grow up in the shadow of a famous parent, especially when you’re in the same sport. But Lani seems to be handling it well. She’s got a good head on her shoulders, and she’s clearly got the talent. Time will only tell how far she can take it, but I sure will be following up on her journey.
