Alright, let’s talk about this “shamble in golf,” whatever that fancy name means. I ain’t no pro, you know, just a regular person who likes to whack a ball now and then. But I heard some folks talking about it, so I figured I’d try to explain it to ya the way I understand it.
So, first off, you gotta get yourself some buddies. Yeah, you can’t play this shamble thing all by your lonesome. You need a team, like a bunch of hens clucking together, you know? The more the merrier, I guess, but usually it’s like three or four folks on a team.

Now, everybody on the team, they gotta hit their balls from the tee box. You know, that little patch of grass where you start. Whack! Everybody hits their ball, just like always.
Here’s where it gets a bit different, though. After everyone’s hit, you gotta look at all them balls and figure out which one went the farthest or landed in the best spot. Maybe it’s the one closest to the hole, or maybe it’s the one sitting pretty in the fairway. You gotta use your noggin and pick the best one. That’s the key, see? Picking the best ball.
- First, everybody hits from the tee.
- Then, you find the best ball.
- After that, everyone plays from that spot, but using their own ball.
Okay, so you picked the best ball. Now, everybody goes over to that spot. But here’s the kicker – you don’t all just play that one ball. Nope. Everybody gets their own ball back and hits it from that chosen spot. It’s like you get a second chance, but you still gotta do the work yourself. You get what I’m saying?
Then you just keep playing like that, hitting your own ball after choosing the best spot each time. You do that until you get that little ball in the hole. And then you do it all over again on the next hole. Sounds like a lot of walking to me, but hey, that’s golf for ya.
Now, about keeping score. That’s where things can get a little tricky. Sometimes, they add up all the scores from each person on the team for each hole. Other times, maybe they just take the best score or two from the team. It depends on how those fancy folks running the game want to do it. Just make sure you understand the rules before you start swinging, or you might end up looking like a goose in a thunderstorm.
There’s all sorts of ways to change things up, too. Like, maybe they say each person on the team has to use their own tee shot a certain number of times. Or maybe they change how they score things. It’s like adding different spices to the same old stew, keeps things interesting, I suppose.
Some folks say there’s some kind of strategy to this shamble thing. Like, if one fella is really good at hitting long, you let him take most of the tee shots. And if another one is good at those short little putts, you let her handle the business around the green. Makes sense, I guess. Play to your strengths, that’s what my old pappy always said, even if he was talking about milking cows and not hitting golf balls.

So, there you have it. That’s the shamble in golf, as best as I can explain it. It ain’t rocket science, just a different way to play the game with your friends. You hit the ball, pick the best one, hit your own ball again, and keep doing that until you’re done. And hopefully, you have a good time doing it. And maybe even win a prize or two, if you’re lucky. But mostly, it’s about getting out there, enjoying the fresh air, and having some laughs with your pals. That’s what I think, anyway.
Remember, golf is supposed to be fun, even if you spend half your time looking for your ball in the weeds. So don’t get too worked up about it, just relax and enjoy the game. And if you mess up, well, just blame it on the wind or the bumpy greens or that darn squirrel that ran across the fairway right when you were swinging.
Now, go on and give it a try. You might just like this shamble thing. And if you don’t, well, at least you got a good walk in and spent some time with your friends. Can’t beat that, can ya?
