Well, let me tell ya, these high school football games, they take a good chunk of time, you know? Ain’t no quick little thing, that’s for sure. You gotta settle in if you’re plannin’ on watchin’ the whole thing.

How long they last? Hmm, somewhere between 2 and 3 hours, I’d say. Give or take. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. It all depends, you see.
- First off, there’s the game itself. They got four of them “quarters,” they call ’em. Each one’s supposed to be 12 minutes long for these high school fellas. Now, in the big leagues, them professional fellas play 15 minutes a quarter, but our boys, they get 12. Adds up to 48 minutes of playin’ time, if you do the math. But lemme tell ya, it ain’t just 48 minutes and you’re done. No sirree!
- Then there’s that halftime break. Gotta give the boys a rest, you know? And the band gets to do their thing, and folks can go grab a hot dog or somethin’. That halftime, well, it can stretch out a bit, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, sometimes even longer if somethin’ special is goin’ on.
- And then there’s all the other stuff that eats up the time. You got timeouts. Coaches callin’ plays, players gettin’ hurt, referees needin’ to talk things over. All that adds up, let me tell ya. And sometimes, if the score’s all tied up at the end, they gotta go into somethin’ called “overtime.” That’s like extra playin’ time to figure out who wins. That can tack on a good 30 minutes or more, dependin’ on how long it takes to break the tie.
So, you see, it ain’t just a straight shot. You got the playin’ time, the halftime, the timeouts, the injuries, the penalties, and maybe even that overtime thing. It all makes the clock keep tickin’.
What makes a game longer or shorter? Well, like I said, that overtime can really stretch things out. And if there’s a lot of penalties, that stops the clock too. You know, them refs throwin’ them yellow flags. And if the boys keep gettin’ hurt, that takes time too. Poor things. Then there’s the passin’ game. If one team’s throwin’ the ball all over the place, that clock seems to stop every other minute. Runnin’ plays, well, they keep things movin’ a little faster, I reckon.
I remember this one game, it went on forever, it seemed like. Back and forth, back and forth. And then, wouldn’t ya know it, overtime! And not just one overtime, but two! We were all bundled up in blankets, freezin’ our tails off, but nobody wanted to leave ‘cause it was so excitin’. That game must’ve lasted darn near four hours. It was somethin’ else, I tell ya.
So, if you’re plannin’ on goin’ to a high school football game, make sure you got plenty of time. Don’t be in a hurry. Bring a blanket if it’s cold, and maybe somethin’ to snack on. And be prepared to yell and cheer for them boys. They work hard out there, and they appreciate the support. And who knows, maybe you’ll get to see an overtime thriller!

Now, about them rules and penalties. I ain’t no expert, mind you. But I know they got rules about how you can tackle, and how you can block. And if you break them rules, you get penalized. They move the ball back, or they give the other team a free down. It can get complicated, but the refs, they try to keep things fair. And sometimes they make mistakes, just like the rest of us. Can’t be helped I guess.
Anyways, that’s the long and short of it. High school football games, they take a while. But they’re fun, and they’re a good way to spend a Friday night, especially if your grandkid is playin’! Just be prepared to be there a while, and don’t forget to cheer loud!
