Southern Columbia football, well, it’s somethin’ special, I tell ya. If ya don’t know, Southern Columbia is a high school over in Catawissa, PA, and their football team—the Tigers, mind ya—have been mighty successful over the years. They got themselves a real good record, and folks talk about ‘em all over the state.

The team has been around for a long time, and through the years, they’ve built up quite the reputation. Heck, it’s hard to not know about ‘em if you’ve been around the area. They’ve won 11 state titles, yep, 11! You’d think that’d be enough, but no, they just keep on winning. And it ain’t just luck—it’s years of hard work, good coaching, and players who really know what they’re doin’.
One thing folks always mention is the coach, Jim Roth. Now that man, he’s somethin’ else. He’s the winningest coach in the state of Pennsylvania, with 469 victories! That’s a whole lotta wins in 38 seasons. I heard he started coachin’ back when I was younger, and now, look at ‘em. They just keep on comin’ out on top every season. Some say he’s the heart and soul of the whole program, and I ain’t gonna argue with that.
Now, it ain’t just the coach that makes the Tigers so great. It’s the players, too. You got folks like Jake Rose, a senior who plays wide receiver and returns punts. They say the boy’s fast as lightning, and I can believe it. I seen him make some of the quickest moves on that field, I tell ya. He’s just one of the many stars on the team. And then there’s Carter Madden, the one who ran for the game-winner in that Westinghouse game. The Tigers were down, but Carter, well, he ain’t the type to give up. He ran that 12-play drive like his life depended on it, and boy, did they pull off a dramatic comeback!
The schedule for this year is lookin’ pretty exciting too. They’ve got a full set of games lined up for the season, and I reckon they’re gonna show everyone just what they’re made of. With each game, the anticipation builds up. People in Catawissa, heck, the whole area, they’re always talkin’ ‘bout when the next game is and who they’ll be up against. Every Friday night, the whole town turns up to support the Tigers. You can see the pride in their faces, and you know it’s more than just football—it’s a way of life.
But it ain’t all about just playin’ the game. These Tigers, they train hard. They put in the hours, day after day. And it shows in the way they play. They’re tough, they’re fast, and they’re smart on that field. It’s no wonder they’re the kings of Class 2A football. No team’s been able to stop ‘em for years. Folks are always wonderin’, how do they do it? How do they keep on winning? The answer, I reckon, is simple: they’ve got heart, and they’ve got dedication.

And don’t forget about the fans. You can’t talk about Southern Columbia football without mentionin’ the folks who show up week after week to cheer ‘em on. From the folks sittin’ in the bleachers to the ones shoutin’ from the sidelines, they make the atmosphere at those games electric. It’s a big ol’ family affair, with everyone rootin’ for the same thing—another victory for the Tigers.
Southern Columbia football isn’t just a team. It’s a tradition. It’s a pride that runs deep through Catawissa, and it’s somethin’ that brings everyone together. From the old-timers who’ve been watchin’ these games for decades to the young folks just now startin’ to pick up a football, it’s clear that this program means the world to ‘em.
So, if you haven’t caught a game yet, you might want to think about it. Southern Columbia’s got one of the finest football programs in the state, and if you ask me, they ain’t slowin’ down anytime soon. Every game is a chance for them to prove just how good they are. And with folks like Jake Rose, Carter Madden, and all the other talented players on the team, I’d say they’re gonna keep that streak goin’ for many years to come.
If you’re lookin’ to catch up on the schedule, the results, or even some of the photos from the games, you can find ‘em all online. MaxPreps got the full schedule for the 2024 season, and let me tell ya, it’s gonna be one for the books. Mark your calendars, get your gear ready, and make sure you’re there to cheer on the Tigers!
